The Opportunity:

Cala Health is seeking a versatile Firmware Engineer with an innovation mindset to join our hardware team, using agile development methods to support early clinical feasibility studies as well as focus on research-stage programs including technology research, scientific research and clinical research. The role will report directly to the Director of Hardware Innovation, and will be responsible for aspects of the stack from hardware support to the application itself, contributing to the development of early stage firmware on low power, wearable platforms.

 

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Implement application and driver code to help build devices to be used in early pilot studies.
  • Learning, owning, and advancing Cala Trio’s user interface in support of research endeavors.
  • Create effective firmware test protocols that can be understood and executed by firmware testers.
  • Drive next generation firmware solutions to evaluate sensors, MCUs, and various emerging technologies.
  • Optimize code for low power applications.
  • Develop software accessories for interacting with the embedded systems, such as manufacturing tools or patient/physician facing applications.
  • Translate exploratory algorithms from various design inputs to embedded C-code for on-device execution.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, performance tuning, verification and validation, and design iteration cycles.

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

We are looking for a Firmware Engineer to contribute to embedded systems engineering in a dynamic, fast-paced startup environment, exemplified by:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • 5+ years experience working in firmware applications for wearables and ultra low power applications.
  • Experience with low-power microcontrollers. Experience with Cortex M0, M3, M4 is a plus.
  • Experience with relevant technologies such as WiFi, BLE, 3G/4G, and sensors is a plus.
  • Strong C programming skills is mandatory; Python programming and comfort across multiple programming languages and platforms is a plus.
  • Great communication skills and comfortable interfacing cross-functionally.
  • Experience writing test protocols and project development plans is mandatory.
  • Expertise in PCB board design is a plus.
  • Experience in Medical Device software development (Class II/Class III) is a plus.
  • ISO-13485 is a plus.
