Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute is seeking a Staff Associate to support to the PI and Postdoc Research Scientists studying the organization of neural networks in the mammalian hippocampus.

Position Summary:

The Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute at Columbia University brings together researchers from different scientific disciplines to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly interactive research environment, laboratories work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers. The Zuckerman Institute is housed in the Jerome L. Greene Science Center, an architectural masterpiece on Columbia University’s Manhattanville campus.

The Staff Associate I will provide research support to the PI and Postdoc Research Scientists studying the organization of neural networks in the mammalian hippocampus and how they encode spatial and episodic memories both in the healthy brain and in models of neuropsychiatric diseases. The Staff Associate I will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory infrastructure and assisting with imaging hardware and software development. In addition, there will be opportunities to participate in specific research project efforts utilizing live imaging and manipulation of neural circuit function in awake, behaving mice using advanced techniques (e.g., in vivo multiphoton microscopy, optogenetic, chemo genetics) under the direct supervision of the PI. This position is entirely grant funded.

The Staff Associate I will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

• Maintaining laboratory infrastructure: experimental recording apparatus and computer/server infrastructure, including optical imaging hardware and software.
• Assisting with functional microscopy and animal behavioral experiments.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in the Biological Sciences, Computer Science or Engineering.
• Four years of professional experience required.

Preferred Requirements:

• Background in physics, optics, optical/electrical engineering, mathematics/statistics or computer science. Programming/coding skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, or other OOPs), preferred.
