Duties and Responsibilities

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in the Max Planck UCL Centre for Computational Psychiatry and Ageing Research to undertake high quality research and produce high-quality publications in the context of an MRC-funded research project “Memory-based sequential decision-making” led by Dr G Elliott Wimmer. The Centre (www.mps-ucl-centre.mpg.de) is part of the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging (www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk), UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, a world-class research environment.

The overarching aim of the project is to understand the role of memory in goal-directed decision making, with a particular focus on the modulating role of mood and depression symptoms. We investigate this using online, in-person, and and neuroimaging (magnetoencephalography or MEG) experiments. As part of this project, the candidate will design and conduct experiments, with analyses focusing on computational modelling, and multivariate neuroimaging approaches.

The post is available from autumn 2021 and is funded by a grant from the MRC for two years in the first instance.

Key Requirements

• The successful candidate should have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in a discipline such as computational, cognitive, or behavioural neuroscience, psychology, computer science or similar.
• Experience with computational modelling of behavioural data and with representational (decoding) approaches to human neuroimaging data is required.
• Solid knowledge of the learning and decision neuroscience literature is essential, as are familiarity with modern software development techniques, experience in programming, IT proficiency at advanced user level, and a high level of consideration and care for research subjects.
• Experience in acquiring and analysing fMRI, MEG or EEG data is desirable.
• Because of the nature of the work, a DBS check will be required.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £32,217 – £33,958 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. If the PhD has not yet been granted, the final accepted version of the thesis must have been submitted to the degree-granting university by the start-date in post.
