Job Summary

A key position is available immediately for a highly motivated individual who holds a PhD in any field related to neuroethics to join the dynamic team at UBC. Under the direction of the Director of Neuroethics Canada, and co-Principal Investigator (co-PI) Dr. Judy Illes, this Postdoctoral Fellow will join a team of researchers devoted to neuroscience and biomedical ethics as part of a large research program entitled “Mend the Gap: A Transformative Biomaterials Platform for Spinal Cord Repair”, funded by the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) Transformation Program.

 

Qualifications

  • PhD in any discipline relevant to neuroethics: e.g., neuroscience, population and public health, health law, medical anthropology, medical sociology.
  • Special interest in spinal cord injury and biomedical engineering.
  • Excellent academic credentials.
  • Working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodology and design.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (written and oral) skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

 

Work Performed

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership of a team of researchers devoted to neuroethical issues and the translation of innovative strategies in health care, specifically for people with spinal cord injury.
  • Data collection (e.g., from surveys, interviews) and analysis to characterize diverse individual perspectives on novel interventions for spinal cord injury, as well as analysis and tracking of informational and policy initiatives.
  • Setting priorities for innovation using inputs from a wide range of stakeholders, including patients, inventors, scientists and policymakers.
  • Presentations, publications and reports on results as appropriate.
  • Participation in task force and committee meetings.
  • Identifying and organizing opportunities for patient engagement and for giving back to the spinal cord injured community.
  • Participation in Neuroethics activities and other matters arising that pertain to the ‘Mend the Gap’ program.

 

Supervision Received

Reports to Dr. Judy Illes. Must be highly self-directed, taking initiative, working independently under the general direction of the PI and as part of a project team environment. Direction may be provided on occasion from co-Principal Investigators in the Mend the Gap program. Performance will be evaluated against set objectives.

 

Supervision Exercised

Provides direction and technical knowledge to the Mend the Gap research team and provides functional direction to researchers. Assigns work to research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students, and research interns. Provides expertise and operational support to ethics-related research activities of the Mend the Gap program.

 

Consequence of Error

Failure to use good judgement, organize work, or provide accurate information regarding the Mend the Gap ethics-related research, key activities, and related communications would have a serious direct or indirect impact on the credibility of the professional and stakeholder communities. All activities must adhere to the highest standards of excellence and ethics. Inappropriate management of confidential documents and information could have an adverse effect on faculty, staff or students, or on UBC or collaborative partners.
