Job Description

Valence Vibrations is an early-stage neurotech company, specializing in affective computing. We aim to make emotional communication more accessible across neurotypes, languages, and cultures by delivering emotional feedback in real-time conversation. Through a variety of both visual and haptic applications that are in development, a user is able to quickly and discreetly interpret the emotions of those around them. Our products help reduce emotional miscommunication, allowing people to better understand and connect with those around them. We’re a small, fast-paced team looking for a hands-on VP of Engineering to help us scale as we launch our apps on multiple marketplaces during the next six months​​ and continue expanding our applications once we’re on the market.

Our ideal candidate will come from a software engineering and data science background and have the technical experience to help build and scale our products. Working closely with the CTO, you will play an integral role in the company’s vision and long-term technology roadmap. You will also be responsible for hiring, onboarding, and managing software engineers to help reach identified development goals.

 

Location

This position is location flexible as working virtually is a viable option for our company. Valence Vibrations is located in Los Angeles, CA, but if you’d like to work remotely, you will need to be available for some regular meetings during Pacific Standard Time.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • As a technology lead, your primary responsibilities will be to lead and manage machine learning research and application development efforts.
  • You will have a leadership role in Valence Vibrations’ product development.
  • You will help hire and manage internal and outsourced engineering teams.
  • You will liaise with the Valence Vibrations executive team to help set technological strategies and adjust development goals using consumer feedback.
  • You will be responsible for developing digital strategies and supervising full-stack organization to ensure products are operating at maximum efficiency, including bug fixes.
  • You will develop and share points of view on new trends, behaviors, and emerging technologies in the affective computing space to give the executive team valuable perspective and insight on current developments in the field.

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

Required

You are:

  • A data scientist or machine learning engineer with significant experience in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and statistical analysis. Specifically, we are looking for experience with keras, tensorflow, and coreML.
  • A seasoned engineer with significant full stack design & development experience, as well as mobile application development expertise.
  • An organized leader, with experience managing and advancing engineering teams.
  • Someone who is proficient in python, swift, and java. 
  • A passionate and strategic technologist, able to foresee bias in models and effectively understand how to pivot development based on consumer feedback.
  • Someone with experience in startups.
  • Someone with strong integrity and passion looking to promote greater diversity in AI.

Bonus Points

  • Experience in affective computing
  • Significant interest in the neurodiversity movement and sensory neuroscience
  • Graduate degree in computer science or data science

 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base Salary range: $150,000 – $200,000, dependent on relevant skills and experience
  • As a key team member you will also receive significant equity
