Reliability & Test Engineer, Robotics

Robot      ·       Fremont, CA      ·     Full time

As a reliability and test engineer on our robotics team, you’ll be responsible for transforming our surgical robot from an experimental medical device to a robust system capable of doing tens of thousands of surgeries. In addition to root-causing persistent issues, you’ll be designing and implementing tests to ensure that the robots and associated surgical tools are highly reliable. Due to the wide array of challenges to solve, we’re looking for engineers with mechanical, electrical, or software experience (or all three!).

For a glimpse of one reliability issue, here’s a video of a UV fluorescent solution used to visualize the splash pattern of a saline nozzle. Determining that the splashing was causing a robot performance issue, figuring out how to record the splash pattern, and redesigning the nozzle to eliminate splashing made the robot much more reliable:

In addition to solving key reliability issues, you’ll have the opportunity to develop test infrastructure that will accelerate the pace of engineering development and validation for the robot. If you’re excited about solving new problems every day, or if you are passionate about test and fixture design, we would love to hear from you!

About you:

  • You find large challenges exciting and enjoy discovering and defining problems as much as solving them.
  • You deliver. You may enjoy thoughtful conversations about problems and perfecting designs, but in the end, you know that what matters is delivering a manufacturable solution that works every time.
  • You are a cross-disciplinary team member. You are excited to work with and learn from software, mechanical, electrical, materials, biological engineers, and neuroscientists. You are comfortable communicating across teams.
  • Resourceful, flexible and adaptable; no task is too big or too small.

Key qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical, electrical, software engineering, or equivalent in experience and ability.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in making systems reliable (whether that’s in school clubs or industry)
  • Strong understanding of engineering first principles.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience designing hardware in the loop test systems.
  • Experience interfacing with sensors, motors, etc.
  • Python experience

What we offer:

  • An opportunity to change the world and work with some of the smartest and the most talented experts from different fields.
  • Growth potential. We rapidly advance team members who have an outsized impact.
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance through a PPO plan; parental leave.
  • Flexible time off + paid holidays.
  • Equity + 401(k) plan.
  • Commuter Benefits.
  • Meals provided.
