Job Summary
We are currently seeking an established R&D leader to drive technical capability growth and external investment to Battelle’s Health Business Unit. Specifically, the successful candidate will lead market-focused growth in neurotechnology. Our neurotechnology work, called NeuroLife, has been published in Nature, featured in the media including CBS This Morning, CNN, the Washington Post, and recipient of multiple R&D100 awards. We are focused on advancing this technology to improve the quality of life of stroke or spinal cord injury survivors through motor control restoration. This position may be remote (U.S) for an exceptional candidate, but will work closely with a team located in Columbus, OH.
Major Responsibilities
The Health Business Unit, as a component of Battelle’s Applied Science & Technology group, is responsible for delivering science and technology services to our commercial and US Government customers to support Battelle’s mission for driving new science to affect broad societal benefit.
The R&D Technical Director is responsible for leading a team of scientists and engineers to work between research, development, and industry, translate cutting-edge innovations into impactful solutions and drive them into commercial platforms. In this role, you will lead the definition and technical execution of the neurotech portfolio and bring neurotech products to the market. You will prepare and implement short and long-term plans for the neurotechnology group, contributing to the growth and continued viability of that team and the broader organization.
Major Responsibilities
- Lead our neurotech product development efforts in unlocking the translational potential of cutting-edge neurotechnology and motor function restoration technologies. Work with the team to develop the technology to drive a clinically viable product to the market for restoration of movement in humans in the near term.
- Analyze clinical feasibility research studies and lead the specification of design features.
- Shape, ground, propose, and lead device development with clear objectives, milestones, and deliverables. Determine the technical strategy to balance near-term neuro productization with long-term development goals for becoming the world leader in commercial R&D for neurotechnology.
- Inform product development of neural technology sub-systems, e.g., neural assistive and neural rehabilitative systems. Lead the development of next generation non-invasive neural interfaces that have the same fidelity as invasive technology. Take that technology through initial clinical trials in the near term.
- Demonstrate the technical & regulatory requirements and processes associated with medical device development.
- Perform as lead subject matter expert when engaging with some of the largest medical device and consumer manufacturing companies who are our partners.
- Guide and implement strategic technical and operational plans to create a market focused neurotech portfolio based on Battelle IP and know-how
- Set IP goals and works with Battelle business partners to develop IP strategies.
- Plan, initiate, and perform marketing activities to identify potential clients, new business segments, and market needs to maximize business opportunities. Develop and maintain relationships with key clients and federal agencies and their staff.
- Contribute to proposals and bid/no bid decision processes. Implement pricing policy and specific pricing practices.
- Maintain a national reputation as an expert in neurotechnology and facilitate Battelle’s position as a thought leader in neurotech
The Following Is Required
- Doctorate degree or equivalent in an Engineering, Life Science, or related discipline relevant to electrical and/or neurotech development, with 17+ years of experience in medical device industry, start-up and/or government experience
- Demonstrated experience in medical device product development, bringing medical devices from inception to market and leading teams in medical device commercialization
- Exceptional ability to recruit, train, motivate and lead high-performance teams and teams of teams in the achievement of ambitious / stretch goals
- A history of successful client interactions and measurable, high quality deliverables.
- Excellent technical writing skills
- S. citizenship is required.
The Following Is Desired
- Experience in biopotential signal monitoring design and electrical stimulator design
- Experience in advanced neural signal processing with machine learning algorithms
- Demonstrated experience leading S&T-based start-ups, technology acquisitions, or in leading fund-raising for tech-focused product offerings, to include successful commercialization exit example(s)
- A history of competing for and winning competitive federal awards
