Job Description

Cajal Neuroscience is seeking a scientist motivated by our mission to develop new medicines for patients with neurodegenerative disorders. As a scientist at Cajal in the Technology Development group, you will join a team implementing emerging microscopy-based techniques for quantitative biology and developing new approaches for highly multiplexed three-dimensional imaging methods. The Technology Development team is responsible for demonstrating scalable data generation pipelines leading to the discovery of novel therapeutics for neurodegeneration.

The ideal candidate will have experience in fluorescence microscopy, spatial transcriptomics, and/or light sheet microscopy, including design, assembly, and use of development and pre-commercial fluorescence microscopy instruments. This candidate will have demonstrated experience in scientific instrument design and implementation, optics, and instrument automation and control software. Additional experience in biological sample preparation, including tissue clearing, is appreciated. Experience coordinating multiple steps in a high-throughput scientific data generation pipeline is a requirement.

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a physical science or engineering
• 3+ years of experience in a biomedical research or clinical laboratory setting
• Ability to translate novel scientific methods into distributable and repeatable quantitative processes
• Demonstrated experience with biomedical imaging methods
• Demonstrated experience implementing novel scientific instrumentation designs
• Demonstrated experience with scientific instrument control software
• Demonstrated experience in automating laboratory processes
• Familiarity with image processing and data visualization software
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to document scientific processes and communicate to other members of the organization
• Knowledge and enforcement of safe work practices in a biomedical laboratory environment

Desired qualifications:

• Broad knowledge of fluorescence microscopy, including familiarity with spatial transcriptomics
• Experience in microscope instrument design and assembly
• Experience optimizing sample preparation methods for specimens such as intact mouse brain tissue, including labeling and tissue clearing
• Experience writing software for instrument control and hardware devices
• Experience with CAD and design for manufacturing
• Familiarity with cloud computing infrastructure and software
• Working knowledge of neuroscience, especially pertaining to neurodegeneration
