Software Engineer, Full Stack Backend

Engineering        ·        San Francisco       ·      Full time

At Atomwise, we invented the first deep learning neural networks for structure-based small molecule drug discovery, and we’re currently deploying it in one of the largest applications of machine learning for life sciences. We work on Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, drug-resistant antibiotics, and other diseases. We’ve partnered with 4 of the top-10 US pharma companies, raised over $100M from top VCs, and have 100+ diverse projects currently running.

Our team has over 50 Ph.D. scientists who contribute to a collaborative academic-like culture that fosters robust scientific and technical discussion. We strongly believe that data wins over opinions, and aim for as little dogma as possible in our decision-making. Our team members have expertise in a wide range of disciplines–from computational chemistry and structural biology to cloud-native best practices–and we regularly have internal seminars open to anyone interested in learning about these topics.

Atomwise uses AI to develop hard to target drugs. We want to build software that reduces the cognitive load on our scientists so they can develop better models and find drugs for even harder targets. As a team, we are at an exciting point – we have more projects and more data, and in response, we are scaling our engineering team to meet the occasion!

We are looking for talented, motivated, and curious full stack engineers to help build custom, internal tools and applications at the intersection of AI, chemistry, and drug development.  As a member of the applications and tools team, your efforts will produce results that will be critical components for AI based drug discovery.

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with machine learning and computational chemistry scientists, product managers, and engineers to scope new software and feature development to tackle chemoinformatics and machine learning problems.
  • Design, develop and test web application backends to support internal tools and pipelines that significantly improve the scientific output for the scientists.
  • Contribute to and Improve engineering standards and processes
  • Learn the process of AI based drug development

Required Qualifications

  • Enjoys being a generalist whose primary focus is backend but can provide contributions to frontend and infrastructure as needed to solve problems to help end users.
  • Thrives in collaborative environments with different stakeholders and subject matter experts.
  • Expertise in web application development with a focus on backend programming
  • Experience writing high-quality code products and shipping products with resilient, scalable backend systems.
  • Advanced-level software engineering skills with Python.
  • Expert level knowledge of one or more web application development frameworks (e.g. Django, Flask, etc).
  • Bachelors degree in CS, Bioinformatics or a related discipline with 5+ years of software engineering experience or equivalent practical experience.
  • Good understanding of commonly used databases (e.g. MySQL, Postgres) and SQL
  • Proficiency in Linux environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience Interacting closely with subject matter experts to scope, design and implement software to tackle cheminformatic and machine learning problems.
  • Experience developing distributed algorithms, ideally for scientific computation
  • An advanced degree in chemistry, biochemistry or bioinformatics
  • Familiarity with cloud computing technologies and services (e.g. Docker,  Kubernetes, and AWS)
  • Familiarity with Javascript and common frameworks such as React, Vue, Typescript

Compensation & benefits

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience.
