Postdoctoral Research Associate, Chemical Biology or Neuroscience, University of Virginia
The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics at the University of Virginia invites applications for postdoc positions in the Laboratory of Dr. Hui-wang Ai (https://med.virginia.edu/ai-lab/). The lab uses interdisciplinary approaches in chemical biology, molecular engineering, and fluorescence and bioluminescence imaging to study and manipulate complex biological systems, with a focus on developing novel molecular indicators to peer into cells and organisms to understand mechanisms.
The Chemical Biology candidate is expected to have synthetic chemistry expertise and can perform multistep organic synthesis independently. Meanwhile, the candidate should be interested in expanding his/her expertise in protein engineering and imaging. The research associate will design and synthesize new luciferase substrates, develop bioluminescent indicators, and work as part of a team of scientists to apply the new tools for cell and in vivo animal imaging.
The Neurobiology research associate will work as part of a team of scientists to apply genetically encoded indicators to studying the role of oxidative stress in neurotransmission and Alzheimer’s disease. The work will involve various in vitro and in vivo approaches, including primary neuron and brain slice preparation and culture, stereotactic injection, fluorescence and bioluminescence imaging of cell and tissue cultures and genetically engineered mice.
- Excellent written and verbal skills are expected.
- The incumbents will participate in a diversity of relevant lab projects and in writing study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications and are expected to develop research programs as time permits.
- The incumbents will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and seminars, as well as work collaboratively with graduate students, undergraduate students, technicians, fellows, and collaborators.
Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period. Experienced and achieved candidates may be considered for appointment as “Research Scientists”.
