The Department of Neuroscience in the School of Medicine and laboratories of Dr. Harald Sontheimer (UVA) and Xiaoting Jia (Virginia Tech) are jointly recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate to carry out full time collaborative research on brain machine interfaces to treat neurological diseases. This NIH funded research project seeks to implant bidirectional electrical and optic interfaces into mouse brain to record and manipulate brain activity in real time. Immediate applications include Epilepsy and Alzheimer diseases. 

These studies are conducted in a well-resourced environment embedded within a team of neuroscientists/engineers with experience in electrophysiology and imaging. Basic familiarity with electrical/biomedical engineering is desirable. Experience in working with living organisms is advantageous yet not essential.  

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years1 and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period. 

 

Required Qualifications:     

  • Ph.D. in neurobiology, neuroscience, physics, engineering or similar fields.
  • The ideal candidate is proficient in at least one of the following techniques: confocal microscopy, brain slice patch clamp electrophysiology, ratiometric calcium imaging, extracellular electrophysiology, neural implant surgery, signal processing, circuit design.
  • The candidate is expected to have a successful research record as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
