Responsibilities

The MRI physicist will work with the faculty and researchers on implementing, evaluating, and developing novel MRI acquisition and analysis techniques for human MRI scanners with an emphasis on functional brain imaging. The ideal candidate would also work with faculty with expertise in multimodal methods to develop state-of-the-art MR processing techniques and support the integration of other neuroimaging (EEG) or stimulation techniques (tACS, TMS) with MRI. The MRI physicist will:

  • Support advanced MRI modalities such as multi-band BOLD fMRI, and multi-echo BOLD fMRI
  • Oversee data quality assurance/quality control (daily/weekly) of existing MR equipment to maintain the integrity of experimental data
  • Provide scientific and technical assistance to researchers and faculty
  • Assist researchers and faculty to implement published pulse sequences and develop novel pulse sequences to advance the state of the art in MRI
  • Supervise a staff technician, faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students during their day-to-day operations of the MRI scanner
  • Contribute to the definition, application and maintenance of standard operating procedures
  • Organize seminars to inform researchers about new developments in and local implementation of imaging methods and analytical techniques
  • Attend scientific meetings to disseminate results of scientific research
  • Serve as principal investigator by soliciting external funding opportunities (such as NIH S10 and NSF MRI mechanisms) that will enrich the breadth and depth of imaging research at FSU
  • Serve as a co-investigator on external and internal research grants with other FSU researchers

 

Qualifications

  • Academic master’s degree or highest-level terminal degree from an accredited institution in MR physics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience and otherwise qualified to perform assigned duties
  • Expert understanding of MR physics, image acquisition, signal processing, imaging processing and image reconstruction in relation to human 3T MRI
  • Ability to design experiments, optimize MRI protocols, analyze data and interpret results
  • MR pulse sequence programming
  • Knowledge of MRI methods such as functional MRI, DTI, T1/T2 relaxation, MRS, ASL and MR angiography
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with a variety of MRI user

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in MR physics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or similar
  • Experience with Siemens MRI scanners, including Siemens IDEA and ICE certification (or ability to obtain)
  • MRI certification by the American Board of Medical Physicists
  • Research background in neuroimaging analysis including use of FSL, SPM, Freesurfer, AFNI, MATLAB and/or Python-based toolboxes
