Our University

The California University of Science and Medicine was founded to help overcome the health disparities experienced by the diverse populations of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties in Southern California. The Inland Empire is a medically underserved area ranking in the lower half of all counties in California for physicians per capita. The university strives to recruit students who are from the area and will serve this area upon graduation. The building contains numerous labs, lecture halls, faculty offices, student areas, and an Info Commons space for mostly digital access to references and resources.

The Department of Medical Education

The Department offers a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences as well as a Doctor of Medicine degree. There are 60 students per year in the Masters program and 130 students per year in the MD program. The faculty consists of basic science and clinical faculty. The basic science faculty, clinicians, and students are engaged in research activities.

Our faculty are committed to utilizing effective and novel evidence-based teaching strategies to produce excellent, caring, service-oriented physicians. We serve an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student population. The Department has dedicated research and clinical faculty in house as well as over 350 community-based faculty with clinical practices in the surrounding area.

Position Purpose

CUSM is a new academic institution in the Inland Empire interested in establishing a Center of Excellence in Applied Neuroscience. We are seeking an experienced, full-time research scientist to join a dynamic team of faculty and students. The position involves working with the CUSM research leadership team in establishing a Center for Applied Neuroscience. The desired candidate will contribute substantively to the strategic focus and planning for the Center, will catalyze collaborations in the area, and will contribute to resource mobilization for the Center. Specific duties would include:

Administrative

• Leading collaborative efforts to develop a full proposal and project plan for the Center for Applied Neuroscience
• Manage research collaborations related to neuroscience

Research

• Engage in neuroscience research collaboratively with CUSM faculty and students
  • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques
  • Write grant proposals to expand research activities
  • Authoring and co-authoring research publications
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed
• Serve as an advisor and mentor to other CUSM faculty to support their efforts and advancement in develop research portfolios
• Provide consultation to investigators and researchers on experimental design and statistical research approaches, requirements, and scientific standards to advance medical knowledge and improve research in public health
• Other duties may also be assigned

Teaching

• Responsibilities include teaching masters and doctoral students in neuroscience as well as statistics, biostatistics, and data science for a minimum of 0.2 FTE

Service

• University service work includes serving on committees, mentoring and advising students, overseeing student research activities, and other service as required

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of scientific reporting and manuscript preparation requirements and standards.
• Ability to work in a team environment to design, analyze, and report on research projects.
• Strong analytical communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in area of expertise.
• Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize projects.

Required:

• PhD in neuroscience, engineering (neuro, biomedical, mechanical, electrical), or a similar field
• Experienced and funded neuroscience researcher
• Teaching experience in undergraduate or graduate medical education
