General Duties

The City University of New York’s newest facility, the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), boasts the success of the University’s rich past, in building a Center of Excellence for scientific research. With a focus in the fields of Nanoscience, Photonics, Structural Biology, Neuroscience, and Environmental Sciences, the ASRC operates as a center of development of an integrated research network that brings together faculty, students, and post-doctoral fellows to perform cutting-edge science. The goal is to educate trainees in becoming the new leaders of tomorrow, by providing growth in increasingly inter-related disciplines of applied science.
The ASRC is part of the Graduate Center, which is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation’s largest urban public university. With over 35 doctoral and master’s programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center’s commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including the ASRC.
The ASRC seeks a Research Assistant to join the Neuroscience Initiative. Reporting to the Director of Neuroscience, the Research Assistant will actively participate in laboratory’s important research. The primary duties will include lab management and assisting in experiments using cell culture and animal models.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Maintains mouse colony, including genotyping, compliance and software updates.
- Performs routine molecular biology laboratory procedures including DNA, RNA and proteins.
- Assists with preventative maintenance and repairs of lab equipment as needed.
- Helps perform histological procedures and imaging analyses.
- Assists in maintaining inventory of supplies, equipment and/or reagents. Assists with ordering supplies/equipment/reagents as authorized or ensures that needs are escalated appropriately.
- Receives supply orders and confirms accuracy of delivery.
- Maintains accurate records of cold storage and other samples. Organizes databases and maintains electronic records of reagents and protocols.
- Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties;Ensures a clean working area and is responsible for washing and storing glassware.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law.
Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office. All CUNY employees must reside within a commutable distance to their campus.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience relevant to the research being performed.
Other Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and professional competencies:
- Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree with 2 years of experience in specific research areas (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry) is essential. Additional experience with extensive bench lab work is preferred. Background in neuroscience is a plus.
- Candidate should be comfortable working with rodents.
- Candidate should have significant experience in molecular biology.
- Flexibility in work schedule to accommodate experimental needs.
- In-depth knowledge of the scientific principles, methods and processes (technical and/or theoretical) used to conduct scientific research– including experimental design, methods of data collection and analysis, and interpreting and reporting results.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Compensation
Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
