Discovery Community Manager

Active Search       ·       San Francisco, CA       ·       Full time

This posting is for an active search. At Arcadia, an active search (as opposed to an “open search”) means we have a clearly-defined need and are actively looking to fill this position in the next 2–3 months. We intend to move relatively quickly once we find the right candidate.

A Bit About Us

We are Arcadia Science. Arcadia is a well-funded, for-profit biology research and development company founded and led by scientists. Our mission is to give a community of researchers the freedom and tools to be adventurous, to discover, and to make scientific exploration financially self-sustaining in the life sciences. We are inspired by the spirit of exploration and aspire to evolve how science is done, who it attracts and rewards, and what it can achieve.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional community builder who will help us develop Arcadia into a science and innovation hub that extends beyond its physical geography to engage with scientists throughout the full range of the research cycle. Ideally this person is a connector — someone who loves people and can design a range of initiatives to attract key constituents into our orbit, build meaningful long-term relationships with scientists in academia and biotech to shape our efforts, and solicit peer feedback for our research products. A strong candidate has full-time research experience in biology or a related field, is experienced in outreach, event organization, or community management, is comfortable working independently and managing multiple projects, and is able to manage collaborations and mediate conflicts. A major responsibility of the eventual recruit will be to help pilot Arcadia’s open science experiment, which relies heavily upon gathering public feedback on our research, so a genuine passion for open science and community building is a must. Successful applicants can expect to be compensated between $90,000–120,000/year with benefits and a highly competitive equity offering, depending on experience level.

In the first few months, you will work to gain an understanding of Arcadia’s mission, vision, and culture, and you will use these insights to develop a community engagement strategy — all the while building high-value connections with awareness of all of our constituents’ needs. You will help us set up our Arcadia Network, a virtual community of scientists with whom we will interact in a meaningful way to solicit public feedback, source impact opportunities, and identify ways to support others’ efforts in the expanding scientific and biotech community.

In the first six months, you will begin to experiment with a range of programmatic offerings to bring in meaningful new contributors and build community within Arcadia’s growing team of scientists, entrepreneurs, and staff. You will take the lead on organizing workshops, symposia, and other events. You will explore which key performance indicators to track so that we can meaningfully measure engagement, participation, feedback, and usage of our research products.

In the first year, Arcadia will begin buzzing and the world will know it. Arcadia will be known as an exciting place to do and share scientific research. You will help shape the growth of the Arcadia Network as it shifts and expands.

In the first few years, you will continue to stay on top of shifting trends in collaborative science across sectors to refine our community engagement approach to align with organizational goals. Arcadia will have an outstanding reputation as a contributor in the ecosystem — and a model for others to follow.

Application Process:

Interested applicants should send a resume and a one-page cover letter describing:

  • a brief narrative of your scientific background
  • a description of prior experience in scientific community outreach
  • a brief statement highlighting tangible prior contributions in service of the scientific community that align with Arcadia’s open science mission

Arcadia Science is an equal opportunity workplace; we welcome people from all backgrounds and communities. We provide competitive compensation and practical benefits to keep you happy and healthy so that you can do your best work.
