10 Aug Senior Research Associate – Mass Spectrometry
Senior Research Associate – Mass Spectrometry
Platforms – Mass Spectrometry · Stanford, California · Full time
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub (https://www.czbiohub.org) is a one-of-a-kind independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities – Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco – into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to make breakthroughs in medicine and develop new technologies, frequently in collaboration with our partner universities. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
The Mass Spectrometry Platform at the CZ Biohub is a dynamic research group which develops cutting edge methodologies in proteomics and metabolomics, and applies them across several biomedical challenges – both driven by our own academic interests, as well as assisting our key collaborators across the CZ Biohub network. In addition to linking proteomics and metabolomics in nearly every study we carry out, we are continually building infrastructure that leverages the other CZ Biohub technology platforms (data science, genomics, computational microscopy, engineering), producing unparalleled opportunities for discovery (see for example, OpenCell).
In this context, we are seeking a skilled Senior Research Associate who will apply a strong technical background to exciting interdisciplinary projects that would be difficult to take on in a traditional academic setting. The successful candidate will spearhead mass spectrometry-based method development and instrument optimization. They will further curate large data sets collected with high-throughput automation systems, and develop ways in which these data can be integrated into a growing multi-omic knowledgebase. Opportunities for taking on one or more independent projects exist that we expect will help the applicant gain visibility in the field of applied mass spectrometry. The majority of work will be performed at the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, however this position also requires infrequent visits to the Mission Bay campus in San Francisco.
You will
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and improve LC-MS infrastructure
- Optimize and automate high-throughput proteomic and/or sample preparation methods
- Spearhead team-based projects with the goal of integrating proteomic data with metabolomics, single-cell RNAseq, and microscopy
- Meet with collaborators to establish experimental parameters, and keep them appraised of experimental progress
- Author publications
- Mentor junior colleagues
- Perform creative and incisive data analyses and present findings in internal and external seminars
You have
Essential –
- 1+ years experience operating state-of-the-art mass spectrometers (Thermo tribrid, Bruker timsTOF-pro, etc)
- 1+ years experience operating nano-flow HPLCs coupled to the above mass spectrometers
- Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or related field. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in these fields and exceptional work experience exceeding the above are encouraged to apply.
- Standard molecular biology skills
- Team-oriented with excellent oral and written skills
- Track record of meticulous laboratory experiment documentation
Nice to have –
- Previous experience with Bruker tims-TOF platform
- Prior analysis of Ion-Mobility mass spec data
- Coding experience (Python, R, Matlab or similar languages)
- Experience integrating multi-omic datasets
- Experience with cell culture
- Training in Immunology, physiology, systems biology, or similar fields
- Experience building metabolomics experiments and analyzing their results
- Project management experience
Chan Zuckerberg Biohub requires all employees, contractors, and interns, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster vaccine dose, if eligible, by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated or obtain a booster dose because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.
