Senior System Engineer

Washington DC – Baltimore Area Hybrid    ·    Full time

About the job

MITRE’s Software Engineering Innovation Center is one of the government’s largest resources dedicated entirely to software engineering; delivering capabilities that modernize legacy systems, that prototype ways to address unmet mission needs, and that deliver advanced functionality pushing the boundaries what is possible. Each of MITRE’s R&D centers utilize our skills and expertise to address today’s cross-cutting technology challenges in domains like agile development, mobile computing, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, human-machine teaming, user experience, virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, decentralization and more.

Responsibilities:

As a Senior Software Systems Engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to leverage your expertise in any of these domains, and at this level you can expect to:

  • Work on or lead software design and development efforts on multiple teams
  • Solve complex technical challenges, prototype/integrate software solutions, and perform technology assessments
  • Interact with your teams and government sponsors through strong oral and written communications
  • Learn from and help shape our center’s engineering culture while keeping pace with current and emerging technologies that interest you

Experience We’re Looking For:

Since we work across a variety of areas, our individual tech stacks can vary just much as our projects. However, we routinely support interviews in C#, C++, Java, JavaScript, and Python.

At a minimum:

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

Required:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • A track-record of owning and delivering on projects
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, including git

Nice to see:

  • A track-record of leading small technical teams
  • Advanced degrees/certifications
  • Experience across the entire software lifecycle, from design/architecture to agile development, testing, continuous integration, deployment (CI/CD), and support
  • Usage of popular development tools and platforms like Github/Gitlab, Jira, Bitbucket, docker, kubernetes, etc.
  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems (i.e. Windows, Linux, Mac)
  • Familiarity with cloud services like AWS, Azure, etc. and surrounding tooling
  • Knowledge of web apps and frameworks, services, or standards across the full stack (i.e. HTML/CSS, SQL/NoSQL databases, APIs, JSON, HTTP, async, REST, React, Django, etc.)
  • Experience in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, mobile development (iOS/Android), DevOps, or any other domain we work in
  • Interest in or contributions to open-source projects

What to Expect:

Strong candidates can expect a future colleague to reach out via email to schedule an initial phone screen, followed by an onsite or video interview at the next stage.

Candidates we hire and project teams we work on are independent, each with their own ways of working. But MITRE fosters a strong culture of collaboration with mentors, communities of practice, employee councils, and no shortage of communication channels to reach back across projects and domains. How will you choose to work, collaborate, and grow?
