The Position

Please note:  This is expected to be an 18 month term position. We will not be sponsoring work visas for this position nor offer relocation assistance.

As a new member of the team, you’ll typically be assigned to one of the four production areas within Drug Substance or Drug Product Manufacturing.  This will allow you to build capabilities and work on increasingly complex technical assignments, with the potential to rotate into future production areas as you gain experience.

 

Job Responsibilities

Safety is paramount to both our employees and our patients, and is therefore at the core of all job responsibilities.  This includes complying with all safety requirements, cGMP, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and manufacturing documentation.  You must immediately report any and all safety and environmental incidents, including injuries, illness, near miss & safety suggestions.  Additional responsibilities include:

  • Utilizing automated systems to operate, clean and sterilize production equipment
  • Operating small-scale cell culture areas and systems by operating cleaning, set up, and maintaining 20L batch feed fermenters; inoculating and maintaining spinner seed cultures using aseptic techniques, maintaining cell banks; and performing general seed lab operations
  • Operating fermenters, centrifuges, other harvest systems and protein purification units
  • Operating and cleaning fixed tank and filtration systems
  • Operating large scale column chromatography systems
  • Preparing solutions required for the production process (media and buffer make-up)
  • Cleaning, assembling, and sterilizing equipment for production by operating glass washers and autoclaves

Shift Details

We have a variety of 12-hour shifts to support our 24×7 facility operations.  Staff working over 8 hours in a day will be paid overtime in accordance with local and state laws. In addition, staff working night shifts will be paid a shift differential.  While we are occasionally able to accommodate shift requests, candidates with open availability will be given priority consideration as we are not able to guarantee shift placement.   

South San Francisco – Commercial Drug Substance Production and Drug Product Shift Details

  • Frontside Days: Sunday thru Tuesday and alternating Wednesdays 7:00am -8:00pm
  • Backside Days: Thursday thru Saturday and alternating Wednesdays 7:00am-8:00pm
  • Frontside Nights: Sunday thru Tuesday and alternating Saturdays: 7:00pm-8:00am
  • Backside Nights: Wednesday thru Friday and alternating Saturdays: 7:00pm-8:00am

 The Clinical Filling/Packaging Team shift schedule will differ.

The shift details for the Clinical Filling/Packing Team:

  • Days: Monday thru Fridays 6:00am – 2:30pm
  • Swing: 2:00pm-10:30pm
  • Graves: 10:00pm- 6:30am

 

Physical Requirements

  • You’ll be on your feet for 8 to 11 hours of the day and will be required to wear Genentech-provided, lab approved steel toe shoes
  • Our facility is expansive – you may climb multiple flights of stairs daily
  • You should be able to lift up to 25lbs on the rare occasion
  • You will work in a clean room environment; you will be required to gown in the form of hospital scrubs, bunny suits, gloves, hair net, mask, safety glasses, hearing protection
  • No make-up or jewelry can be worn when working in the clean room environment
  • You may work with hazardous materials and chemicals 

 

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Preferred – Degree in Life Sciences/Engineering, Associate’s or Biotech certificate from approved program
  • Preferred- Minimum 3 months of relevant working experience in a cGMP manufacturing environment.
