Overview
The Brain Rhythms Laboratory, led by Dr. Paola Malerba, is looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher or Research Scientist in Mathematical/Computational Neuroscience. Duties will include developing analytics and machine learning approaches to human EEG analysis; and shaping algorithmic solutions for ongoing research questions as part of the PI research program. The researcher will contribute to studies that emphasize both basic and translational research, and the ideal candidate will have experience in programming, computational modelling of biophysical neuronal networks, and signal processing.
This position is for candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., computational neuroscience, mathematics, physics, engineering). The degree of pre-existing post-doctoral experience will inform if the candidate will be offered a post-doctoral or research scientist position. The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at NCH is a collaborative interdisciplinary environment, that strives to apply the most modern knowledge to challenging questions with high impact.
The Malerba lab is part of the Center for Biobehavioral Health and affiliated to the Battelle Center for Computational Biology; and contributes to the Chronic Brain Injury collaborative at Ohio State University and the Neurodevelopmental Research Interest Group at NCH. We have collaborations at local, national, and international level and are developing strategies to introduce brain dynamics during sleep to the toolbox of medical interventions. Responsibilities
- With guidance from the laboratory director, designs computational experiments and develops algorithmic protocols required to conduct productive research in a specific scientific area. After the study has been designed, performs the research work in accordance with the protocol.
- Records and analyzes computational output of data generated by the research study.
- Contributes to scientific and technical papers from the results of the research work.
- Presents findings at local, national, and international research forums.
- When appropriate, collaborates with other ongoing research efforts within the CBH, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, or The Ohio State University.
Qualifications
- PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g. computational neuroscience, applied mathematics).
- Previous research experience: those with experience in computational modeling of excitatory-inhibitory rhythms and/or analysis of electrophysiology data are encouraged to apply.
- Familiarity with machine learning methods and literature is preferred
- Necessary technical skills in the appropriate area of research (includes Matlab, Phyton and C++, signal processing and basic neuroscience).
- Ability to work independently, take initiative and problem-solve effectively.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to develop complex position papers and reports; and help in preparation of research grant proposals and scientific publications.
