VP Science & Research
Elemind Technologies, Inc.
Elemind Technologies, Inc. was founded by scientists at MIT, Penn, and UConn with the goal of developing individually tailored, physiology-driven, non-invasive technologies that modulate brain and behavioral states to improve human health. Our ongoing clinical studies with Elemind’s wearable investigational devices track neural oscillations with electroencephalography (EEG) and deliver phase-locked audible sound stimulation with unparalleled temporal precision in order to modulate neural oscillations and attentional states and promote healthy sleep. Additional clinical trials are examining the feasibility to track and modulate brain oscillations in order to reduce pain thresholds and augment pharmacological anesthesia, as well as control tremor. We are seeking a Vice President of Science & Research to orchestrate and lead the Company’s research, scientific collaborations, clinical trials, publications and federal grant applications that will be the foundation of Elemind’s evidence-driven product development plan. This role will report to the Chief Executive Officer. The VP Science & Research will be a key member of Elemind’s executive team.
Responsibilities
- Lead Elemind’s Science & Research Team. The VP of science will lead the science and research team, orchestrate and oversee research and clinical trials, testing efficacy and feasibility of use of our investigational devices. You will play a critical role in directing the science team to provide evidence-driven clinical research. The findings of this research will flow directly into product features and will shape the future of product development.
- Design, Orchestrate and Direct Clinical Trials.
- Clinical Trial Design: Working with our science and sleep physiology advisors, you will design clinical trials testing feasibility to use our wearable device to promote healthy sleep. Primary outcome measures will be based on guidelines set out by the American Association of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Secondary outcome measures will be developed with your guidance based on objective physiological indices including EEG power analyses.
- Clinical Trial Orchestration: You will work with the science team to update IRB clinical study protocols and internal protocols to run iterative product quality and performance testing prior to initiating any clinical trial study. You will direct our Study Coordinator and research team to set up HIPAA compliant data management programs and other required features for registered clinical trial management.
- Clinical Trial Direction: Currently, Elemind is running at-home sleep studies with our wearable EEG headband, an investigational device. Future Clinical Trials will require federal funding and collaboration with sleep experts and academic and industry partners. You will direct Elemind and federally funded studies to test feasibility to use the technology in individuals with clinically confirmed insomnia.
- Publish Impactful Clinical Study Results. You will orchestrate the clinical trial study and data analytics needed to write-up and publish research results in peer reviewed journals.
- Apply for Federal Grants. You will design studies and submit grants to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF) and/or other federal institutes to support technology development and clinical trials.
- Build Collaborative Research with Academic and Industry Partners. Develop and strengthen collaborations with academic and industry partners to develop critical features and applications for Elemind’s technology. You will include these partners in your federal grant applications.
- Work with FDA Experts to Develop a FDA Strategy and Device Quality Assurance Plan.
- Develop Clear Plans to Adhere to Budgets and Timelines. Ensures budgets, timelines, compliance requirements are factored into research and clinical trial design.
Required Skills
- An established record of leading neuroscience and clinical research teams. You will have dual experience in industry and academia with minimum of 5-10 years being a Principal Investigator and/or Research Director.
- An established record of being a Principal Investigator (PI) on federal grants in the US. Ideally, you will have been a PI on one or more DARPA grants or National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and/or STTR grants.
- A strong record of scientific publications. Ideally, you will have a minimum of 50 first or senior author neuroscience publications establishing you as an expert in relevant areas. Scientific specialties of interest include: 1) sensory-motor neuroscience; 2) neural mechanisms of attention, memory and cognition; 3) closed-loop or other neuromodulation technologies; 4) neuropharmacology and/or neurophysiology of sensation, attention, memory, cognition and/or sleep; 5) scalp and/or intracranial EEG or intracranial electrocorticography (ECoG); 6) neural mechanisms and applications of sensory therapy (e.g. music therapy). In all of these areas some expertise in human applications is preferable.
- An established record of running federally registered clinical trials through clinicaltrials.gov. Strong applicants will have experience designing and running registered clinical trials and an implicit understanding of the methodology and federal regulatory requirements governing clinical trials needed to obtain digital therapeutic and/or medical device clearance.
- Experience in developing device quality management plans. Strong applicants will have some knowledge of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and requirements for Quality System Regulation (QSR) and good manufacturing practice (cGMP) standards for medical devices (ISO 13485) and and understanding of how to work with Company teams to develop testing and assessment protocols needed to adhere to a device quality management plan.
- Experience orchestrating research collaborations across multiple sites and institutes. Strong applicants will have experience orchestrating and overseeing research collaborations with academic and/or partnering industry collaborators.
- Excellent organization and communications skills. With each iteration of device, firmware and software development, the science team will run product performance and quality testing prior to using devices in clinical studies. This requires a strong logistical plan and the ability to communicate efficiently with other Company teams (i.e., operations, product development and engineering teams) in order to meet your study goals and projected timelines.
- Translational Science Vision. A shared goal to translate scientific discovery into health applications that are non-invasive and accessible to many people. Strong applicants may have experience in driving policy to help broaden access.
Education And Key Experience
- PhD (MD/PhD preferred) in Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, or related field
- Research experience and/or Principle Investigator in an academic institution
- Research experience and/or Directorship in a relevant industry position.
- Leadership experience at a company (a non-academic institution), where you were responsible for completing human studies on tight timelines and tight budgets.
