About the Role
As a staff electrical engineer, you will have the opportunity to lead the electronic system design of our wearable speech generating devices. You will work closely with internal and external cross-functional team members to create cutting edge accessible technology.
The position is a hybrid role and requires both in-office (Liberty Village location in Toronto) and remote work. Up to 10% travel required.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Design and development of electrical systems related to wearable speech generating devices, manufacturing fixtures and other projects as assigned. This may include schematic design and layout design.
- Board bring-up in collaboration with engineering team members.
- Manage the development and execution of electrical or system reliability tests as assigned, such as HALT or salt fog testing.
- Perform design transfer activities to contract manufacturers.
- Work with other engineering areas to ensure designs integrate at the system level to meet overall product requirements.
- Collaborate with internal and external engineering and scientific groups as needed to ensure an integrated design that meets the system requirements.
- Mentor other engineers as needed to build overall organizational competence in good electrical engineering practices.
- Oversee or participate in design for manufacturing or design for assembly activities.
- Oversee or participate in cost of goods sold reduction activities.
- Oversee or participate in IQ/OQ/PQ of manufacturing fixtures/gauges.
- Participate in risk management activities related to mechanical, system and product risks.
- Perform failure modes and effects analysis on electrical systems.
- Perform root cause analysis on identified failures or defects.
- Prototype or develop firmware for design verification testing or production as needed.
- Perform supply chain risk assessment and reduction exercises.
- Supervise other engineers as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineer with 10+ years of experience.
- Experience with Altium CAD.
- Experience working with outsourced layout or first-hand layout experience required.
- Prior experience designing flex PCBs.
- Experience designing high input-impedance high-gain data acquisition systems.
- Experience working in a regulated domain desirable (Medical, aerospace, automotive).
- Experience with IEC 60601, FCC compliance, and CE marking.
- Experience designing PCBs with 4-8 layers.
- Understanding of PCB fabrication and assembly process.
- Experience designing electrical systems with cellular and WIFI/Bluetooth capabilities.
- Working knowledge of RF design.
- Analog, digital and power electronics design experience.
- Prior experience working with bio-signal acquisition systems.
- Prior experience working with augmented reality devices.
- Experience designing for manufacturability and assembly.
- Experience designing for ICT and/or flying probe testing.
- Working knowledge of relevant IPC standards (for example IPC-610-A).
- Prior experience designing electrical systems for a class 2 medical device.
- Experience completing electrical safety and compliance testing, including RFID immunity testing.
- Familiarity with common interfaces such as I2C or SPI.
