Summary
The Subscriptions and Licensing Specialist is primarily responsible for overseeing sales of institutional subscriptions to The Journal of Neuroscience and author billing for both JNeurosci and eNeuro. The Specialist will track revenue performance against the budget, minimize subscriber attrition, and serve as the primary point of contact for a broad range of journal customers. Additionally, the Specialist will need to monitor licensing trends in and funder mandates affecting scholarly publishing, and ensure SfN remains in step with the industry. This role is essential to the long-term success of the scientific publishing program through its support of revenue generating activities and customer communications.
Position is REMOTE through 12/31/2022; Will return to Washington, DC offices in January 2023. Candidates should be local to D.C. or available to relocate.
Essential Job Functions include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Conducts annual subscription renewal process, including outreach to subscribing or lapsed institutions, quoting prices to prospective customers, and updating websites and advertising materials.
- Ensures subscription orders are processed correctly and in accordance with SfN accounting policies.
- Supports the Director of Scientific Publications in negoatiating global and multi-site licenses, as well as other subscription or licensing agreements as needed.
- Manages author billing operations for both journals, including ensuring invoices are generated correctly, following up with authors about payments, and processing discounts and refunds.
- Provides support to the Director of Scientific Publications on tracking revenue against targets, regular financial forecasts, and setting the annual budget.
- Responds to requests to reuse journal content from third-parties, and seeks permission from third-parties to use licensed material in the journals.
- Tracks data and statistics on subscription sales, open access, and publication fees, and regularly updates the Director of Scientific Publications.
- Monitors trends in open access publishing and funder mandates.
- Ensures high-quality customer to institutional subscribers, authors, and other customers.
- Manages relationship subscription vendor.
- Collaborates with the Editorial Manager, Production Manager, and other internal stakeholders as needed.

Minimum Requirements And Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 2-3 years of experience in publishing, including knowledge of publication licenses, copyright, and journal subscription models. Scholarly or STEM publishing experience preferred.

- Ability to set priorities, take initiative, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines and budget.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work within and across teams to achieve results.
- Highly organized, analytical, and detail-oriented.
- Experience with subscription processing or author billing.
- Experience using association management or billing/payment systems.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Math Ability:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, the incumbent should be skilled in the use and application of Microsoft Office; familiarity with databases, including association management systems and experience working with Drupal programing is desirable.
