Snapshot

We are looking for a Responsible Development & Innovation (ReDI) Manager to join the Ethics & Society team at DeepMind.

In this role you will be responsible for partnering with teams working on global challenges to consider the downstream impacts of DeepMind’s research and its applications. You will collaborate on topics including life sciences, climate & the environment, and education to consider the potential societal benefits and risks of our work.

You will work with teams at DeepMind, and internal and external partners, to ensure that our work is conducted in line with ethics and safety best practices, helping DeepMind to progress towards its mission.

The Role

As a ReDI Manager within the Ethics & Society team you’ll use your domain and social impact expertise to deliver impactful work through direct collaboration on groundbreaking research projects and to help develop the broader governance ecosystem at DeepMind.

The responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with teams on projects across a range of areas, including life sciences and climate to assess the direct and indirect implications of DeepMind’s applications and research, in addition to projects focusing on the societal impacts of AI.
  • Being a part of an interdisciplinary team working on identifying risks and opportunities associated with a project, including implementing mitigations for risks identified with work and bringing in relevant expertise.
  • Conducting expert interviews, workshops, or other forms of engagement to support teams in considering the downstream impacts of their work.
  • Guiding project teams through DeepMind’s ethics governance processes when needed.
  • Collaborating with external partners to test and validate potential risks and benefits of our work.
  • Identifying areas relevant to ethics and safety to advance research
  • Monitoring the outcomes of projects to understand their impact and to identify lessons to be included in future work.
  • Collaborating with teams to consider how to responsibly develop and deploy DeepMind solutions.
  • Developing and documenting best practices through working with internal DeepMind teams and experts, and where appropriate, external organisations, to develop best practices for DeepMind projects.

In order to set you up for success as a ReDI Manager at DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Experience navigating and assessing complex ethical and societal questions related to technology development, including balancing the benefits and risks of research and applications.
  • Experience within the fields of biology, ecology, climate science, environmental science, renewable energy or other relevant domains.
  • A strong understanding of the challenges and issues in the field of AI Ethics.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across a variety of fields and levels.
  • Significant experience supporting teams to deliver projects in fast-paced and constantly evolving environments.
  • Navigating, innovating and defining complex processes.
  • Experience working within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex concepts and ideas simply for a range of collaborators.
  • Excellent technical understanding and communication ability, with the ability to distil sophisticated technical ideas to their essence.
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating the perspectives and interests of a diverse range of groups and stakeholders, particularly those from historically marginalised communities.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience working with governance processes within a public or private institution.
  • Experience working within the field of AI Ethics.
  • Experience of managing and running complex projects with multidisciplinary stakeholders.
  • Product management expertise or other similar experience.

If you don’t think you embody all of the above criteria, please still seriously consider applying! This role (and therefore the requirements) is broad, and we’d be excited to discuss how you see yourself contributing across it, in particular the opportunities to learn and grow on the job.
