Research Project Manager

Description
Oura is an award-winning and fast-growing startup that helps people track all stages of sleep and activity using the Oura Ring and connected app. By providing daily feedback and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles, we’ve helped over million people improve their sleep, understand their bodies, and transform their health. We’re on a mission to empower every person to own their inner potential, and we’re seeking candidates who want to make an impact on our journey.
We are looking for an experienced Research Project Manager to join our Research Operations team in the San Francisco office. This team leads a variety of research studies, both internal and external, to develop new features and continue to improve the accuracy of Oura’s algorithms.
You will have a key role in managing strategic research activities at Oura. You will work with teams throughout the company to develop new protocols and ensure the logistical success of large data collection projects. This requires an end-to-end understanding of the data flows, including technical aspects of the hardware, firmware, and software, as well as the algorithm development.
You will build strong relationships with current and potential external research partners, serving as an external company representative. Our research partnerships often lead to public validations, scientific publications, B2B sales, enterprise sales, and additional research opportunities.
The specific responsibilities span four areas: logistics; protocols, data quality, and publication; external partnerships, and internal collaboration.
Logistics
- Track project objectives and milestones; monitor the development and implementation of the necessary processes and procedures, action plans, and schedules of assigned projects.
- Manage data collections: scheduling teams and resources, making sure supplies are available and ready, and training research coordinators.
- Work cross-functionally with Oura’s teams and researchers to ensure all research equipment and associated records are well organized and easy to access.
Protocols, Data Quality, and Publication
- Design and refine new protocols, in close collaboration with product and science teams.
- Manage quality assurance and quality control of research data, including project documentation.
- Ensure that all data privacy and regulatory requirements are fully satisfied.
- Contribute to research publications.
External Partnerships
- Establish, coordinate, and lead research partnerships meetings (including presentations, agendas, and next actions).
- Work with Oura and partner legal teams to ensure all required confidentiality, data use, data sharing, research contracts, and master service agreements are in place and upheld.
- Understand and be fluent in Oura’s key brand initiatives so that all external interactions represent Oura’s public image.
- Ensure all research partner communications are responded to and addressed in a timely manner.
Internal Collaboration
- Maintain a positive and collaborative environment across all teams.
- Be flexible and responsive to key company initiatives if urgently requested by senior management.
- Be fluent in Oura’s research data and equipment capabilities.
Requirements
We would love to have you on our team if you have any of the following, but don’t worry too much if you don’t fill all the requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in health, biological sciences or other related fields
- Minimum 3+ years experience in human studies research, in academic, commercial, or clinical settings (e.g. consent, IRB approval, and data flows)
- Track record of delivering high-quality data sets with meticulous documentation, while following best practices for human studies research (e.g. Good Clinical Practice)
- Fluency in writing, revising, and executing new research protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP)
- Experience with learning new technologies, both in terms of sensors and software tools
- Experience in managing relationships with external research partners
- Adaptability within a dynamic and collaborative environment
- Strong interest in learning SQL, Python, or other tools for interacting with data
- Commitment to improving processes and reduce inefficiencies
- Willingness to be flexible with scheduling (e.g. site visits and calls with the teams in Finland may occasionally fall outside normal business hours)
- Located in San Francisco
