Cognitive Neuroscience Research Assistant

The Stanford Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Laboratory is always looking for highly talented and motivated research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants to join our team. We do not accept high school interns.

The Stanford Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Laboratory (SCSNL), directed by Prof. Vinod Menon, aims to advance fundamental knowledge of human brain function and to use this knowledge to help children and adults with psychiatric and neurological disorders. Our research integrates multimodal brain imaging techniques with novel computational techniques and cognitive-behavioral-clinical assays to determine mechanisms underlying cognitive, emotional, and social function and dysfunction. Our interdisciplinary team includes researchers from multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, including cognitive neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry, neurology, bioinformatics, computer science, and electrical/biomedical engineering.

Lab projects focus on normative neurocognitive function across the human lifespan, and robust identification of cognitive and neurobiological signatures of neurodevelopmental, psychiatric and neurological disorders. Projects span multiple clinical disorders, including learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders, schizophrenia, and dementia. All projects typically involve working with a multidisciplinary team of researchers developing and implementing novel computational tools and experimental techniques for probing brain function and dysfunction.

Cognitive Neuroscience Research Assistant

This is an exciting opportunity to work on brain imaging studies of cognitive function and dysfunction, cognitive development and learning disabilities. The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of research in the lab, including: acquisition and analysis of functional and structural brain imaging data, assembling, administering, and scoring neuropsychological assessments, screening and recruiting participants, obtaining informed consent, scheduling participants for testing, tracking progress of the study and behavioral data, verifying data and entering pertinent information into database for statistical analysis, conducting statistical analyses, and assisting with manuscript preparation. Please note many sessions with research participants will take place on the weekends, and occasionally in the evenings. A minimum commitment of two years is required.

Qualifications

  • Requires a BS/BA degree in psychology, human biology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering or related fields as well as one to two years of research experience.
  • A strong academic record is essential.
  • Past research experience in cognitive neuroscience is highly desirable.
  • Experience with any of the following would be an added advantage: brain imaging data acquisition, MRI data analysis, neuropsychological assessments, computer programming, MATLAB, signal processing, and statistical analysis.
  • The candidate must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills; the ability to work well with children; a willingness to tackle complex tasks in an independent manner; and a strong work ethic.
