Program Overview

The Division of Translational Research (DTR) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) directs, plans, and supports programs of research that translate knowledge from basic science to discover the etiology, pathophysiology, and trajectory of mental disorders and develop effective interventions for children and adults. The DTR seeks exceptional candidates to fill the position of Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) within the Child Traumatic Stress Research Program and Dimensional Traumatic Stress Research Program.

The Child and Dimensional Programs support traumatic stress research by exploring basic dimensions of functioning (e.g., fear circuitry, working memory, arousal, emotion regulation) relevant to traditionally defined or perceived posttraumatic psychopathology among children, adolescents, and adults. These research programs are largely clinical with a continuum of research from mechanisms of disease risk, onset, progression, and recovery through the pursuit of novel intervention targets and early-stage therapeutic development clinical trials. DTR is seeking candidates who have a strong understanding of traumatic stress research.

Position Duties

• This Program Officer position involves opportunities for interagency interaction and communications/policy/press interaction.
• The ideal candidate must be able to collaborate with staff on the planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of programs and initiatives in the assigned specialty area of research.
• Candidates must also possess the ability to provide analyses to program staff of new research proposals, both pre- and post-application, regarding scientific strengths and weaknesses, experimental design, technical approaches, and overall impact.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited college or university with the ability to analyze the scientific merit and the adequacy of current and projected research programs.

This position requires using scientific expertise to review grant proposals and interact with potential grantees to obtain additional information. Strong organizational, oral, writing, and communication skills are required.

The Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications and experience.
