Data Virtuosa/o, inspired to compose AI master pieces!

What you will do

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist/Engineer at our OnePlanet Research Center in Wageningen and Nijmegen, Netherlands. You will work in a diverse and multidisciplinary team of electronic, biomedical, bio-chemical, and system engineers, as well as with data scientists, chemists, and biologists, researching and developing innovative health solutions. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Develop and validate data-driven models and pipelines from multi-sensor data streams and heterogeneous data (e.g., physiological, behavioral, omics, environmental) for Digital Twin and Precision Health solutions. Extract and link features from physiological signals, such as ECG, PPG, and EEG, as well as from next generation sensors, for Digital Twinning.
  • Implement and apply techniques for: autoencoding, generative modeling, transfer learning; synthesis of big and rich datasets resembling available datasets of limited extent; using synthetic data for feasibility testing, speeding-up, and streamlining of machine learning pipelines for Digital Twins; data-driven modeling to simulate, enrich, and evaluate digital replicas of subjects or biological processes.
  • Design, develop, and maintain repositories of efficient, reusable, and reliable scientific code. Promote and coach appropriate software engineering techniques and practices among OnePlanet’s scientific developers to further grow our code base.
  • Optimize algorithms to tackle computational constraints in machine learning pipelines.
  • Keep an up-to-date overview of novel machine learning approaches. Identify the ones that should be used and/or further researched and developed for OnePlanet’s activities.
  • Collect, clean and curate existing and new datasets.
  • Actively advise and take part in the experimental design and execution of (clinical) studies and data collection campaigns. Validate OnePlanet models on the basis of such.
  • Regularly communicate both the achievements and the challenges you face to the team, receiving and providing feedback.
  • Proactively prepare and publish selected OnePlanet’s research in scientific articles and conferences.

Who you are

You are a data scientist with the following experience, skills, and background:

  • PhD or MSc degree (with 4+ years of experience) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Physics, or a similar field.
  • Working experience in the field of machine learning and/or data engineering.
  • Solid experience with Python is a must, knowledge of C++ and/or MATLAB is a plus.
  • Extensive expertise with Git for version control and for developing reusable code.
  • Expertise in data augmentation and synthesis, autoencoding or generative modeling. Experience in Bayesian networks, causal inference, data fusion, heterogeneous data encoding, or multimodal AI.
  • Proven experience in data projects deployed at production-level is a big plus.
  • Affinity with a broad range of precision-health-related topics such as nutrition, behavior, biology, and Digital Twins.
  • Able to deal with ambiguity in an uncertain research process. You see change as an opportunity to learn and grow, and you adapt the research course considering boundary conditions and resources at hand.
  • Hands-on attitude, which means you take initiative, think proactively, have a flexible attitude, and enjoy solving problems.
  • Team player with good communication skills and the ability to give quality feedback.
  • Excellent English language skills (written and spoken).
