Job Description

60 million! That is how many people are affected globally by glaucoma. This can lead to progressive damage to retinal ganglion cells and the optic nerve and may lead to blindness.

At Novartis, we are developing new therapies to treat glaucoma, the silent thief of sight, and prevent glaucoma disease progression by lowering eye pressure and by protecting retinal neurons.

 

We are looking for an experienced scientist to join our Ophthalmology Department to support the discovery and development of innovative glaucoma treatments.

 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Applying your training to discover novel biology in the field of neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo systems.
  • Contribute to experimental design, and independently perform experiments, troubleshoot issues, evaluate data, generate reports, suggest next steps, and present data at internal forums.
  • Stay current on literature and technological advances and to collaborate with cross-functional teams on mechanisms of action studies, target discovery, and drug development.
  • Assist in general laboratory maintenance.

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • MS or BS in Biology, Immunology, Neurobiology, or related field with >3 years of full time academic or industry laboratory experience. The level of the position will be commensurate with experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a broad range of techniques in molecular/ protein/ cell biology (such as qPCR, RNA/DNA preparation, CRISPR gene editing, Western blotting, cell transfection/transduction, AAV/Lenti-viral vectors, immunofluorescent staining, flow cytometry, fluorescent microscopy imaging, and ELISA).
  • Hands-on experience in culturing primary cells or ESC/iPSC-derived cells.
  • Highly motivated self-starter and problem-solver with a demonstrated ability to adapt quickly, work independently, and ability to thrive in a fast-paced collaborative research environment.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, collaboration skills and attention to details.

 

Desirable:

  • Training in ophthalmology, neuroscience, or immunology is preferred.
  • Familiarity with tissue microdissection, explant culture, primary cell isolation from tissues, complex cell culture systems, and phenotypic assays is preferred.
