Job Description:

General Description: The Brain Rhythms Laboratory, led by Dr. Paola Malerba, is looking for a highly motivated Researcher Scientist. Duties will include developing analytical strategies for sleep brain dynamics on the EEG manifold and conducting analyses of datasets under the direction of the PI. The researcher will contribute to studies that emphasize both basic and translational research, and the ideal candidate will have experience in analysis of electrophysiology neural data and signal processing.

This long-term position is for candidates with a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., computational neuroscience, mathematics, physics, engineering), post-docs at all levels of experience are encouraged to apply. The laboratory values diversity in background, origin, training, competencies and experiences. Learning together and from one another is a core value of our research work. We welcome all applications from qualified candidates. We are especially interested in hearing from candidates that are currently under-represented in STEM research, including those with a non-traditional path to a research career. The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at NCH is a collaborative interdisciplinary environment, that strives to apply the most modern knowledge to challenging questions with high impact.

The Malerba lab is part of the Center for Biobehavioral Health and affiliated to the Battelle Center for Computational Biology; and contributes to the Chronic Brain Injury collaborative at Ohio State University and the Neurodevelopmental Research Interest Group at NCH. We have collaborations at local, national, and international level and are developing strategies to introduce brain dynamics during sleep to the toolbox of medical interventions. For more information, see the Malerba Lab webpage.

Responsibilities

  • With guidance from the laboratory director, develops algorithmic protocols required to conduct productive research in a specific scientific area. After the analysis has been designed, performs the research work in accordance with the protocol.
  • Analyzes computational output of data generated by the research study.
  • Contributes to scientific and technical papers from the results of the research work. Writes research papers and contributes specific portions to grant applications.
  • Presents findings at local, national, and international research forums.
  • When appropriate, collaborates with other ongoing lab research efforts within the CBH, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, or The Ohio State University.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., signal processing, applied mathematics).
  • Previous research experience: those with experience in analysis of electrophysiology data, dynamical systems and biophysical rhythms are encouraged to apply.
  • Familiarity with machine learning methods and literature is preferred
  • Necessary technical skills in the appropriate area of research (includes Matlab, Phyton and C++, basic signal processing and basic neuroscience).
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and problem-solve effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop complex position papers and reports; and help in preparation of research grant proposals and scientific publications.
