Senior Embedded Systems Hardware Engineer – Implantable Medical Devices
Product Design · Houston, TX (Hybrid) · Full time
About the job
Embedded Systems Hardware Engineer
In this role you will lead hardware design and testing for Motif’s minimally invasive neurotech, ensuring seamless operation and functionality of the hardware and embedded firmware design. The system consists of a small implant wirelessly powered via magnetic fields from an external wearable transmitter. With this system, you will work as a full stack engineer from the initial PCB design and layout to the embedded firmware development, integrating existing designs with regulatory, safety, and user need requirements.
Motif is a startup, so this role will allow one to extend beyond the strict outline in this job description as the whole company will generally jump on and help in various operational capacities.
What is Motif?
Motif is a medical device startup based in Houston, Texas. We are designing and developing minimally invasive electronic solutions for serious mental health conditions. Powered by our patent-pending methods for wireless power and data transmission, our goal is to create the smallest implantable brain stimulator and deliver therapies to patients by 2024.
We are a seed-stage startup with funding from both venture capital firms, grants, and private angel and founder investments.
Where are we going, and how can you help?
We are currently completing the development of our first minimally invasive neural stimulation system and preparing for future versions with additional functionality based on our platform technology.
We are looking for an Embedded Systems Hardware Engineer for our Houston lab to take over our early prototype system designs and combine and redesign them into one cohesive platform wireless system, ensuring that they meet our product and quality requirements.
The Right Partner
Motif is being built by highly dedicated people with passion for neurotechnology, clinical product development, and putting the patient first. We are looking for people with the same energy.
Does this sound like you?
- Do you want to create a future where technology enables better mental health care?
- Do you like testing hypotheses, solving problems, and moving quickly?
- Do you believe that openness and honesty are key to team success?
If yes to the above, then you may love working with Motif.
In this role, you will…
- Contribute and work on all phases of analog and digital systems design (product specification, system architecture, component selection, schematic design, PCB layout, firmware development, troubleshooting, and transition to manufacturing)
- Create and support test protocols for the verification and validation of hardware and embedded software
- Update the device design as needed to meet patient and regulatory requirements
- Work collaboratively with other researchers to integrate their prototype circuit designs into a manufacturable product
- Test system components in pre-clinical studies and clinical environments
- Interact with software such as Google Suite/Workspace, Clickup project management tools, a medical device quality management system, internally built engineering test jigs and setups, and more.
- In the early stages of the company, you will also assist with setting up and designing the lab and prototype manufacturing workspace.
You Will Need
- Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
- One of the following:
- 2+ years experience in an industry-relevant field
- Master’s degree and 1+ years experience in an industry-relevant field
- A strong background in embedded system design, including embedded system firmware
- Experience working with Eclipse IDE platforms or similar
- The ability to design and develop prototype PCBs including reading schematics and component data sheets
- The ability to test, debug and troubleshoot embedded systems and microcontroller peripherals
- The ability to design or update existing designs for specific medical device code requirements
- Communication and teamwork skills to work with different engineers and third parties to integrate existing circuit designs into one complete system
- The ability to work within a multi-disciplinary fast-paced start-up environment balancing multiple projects
- To be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Houston, TX area
It is a bonus if you are:
- Experienced developing medical devices in a regulated environment under IEC 60601 and ISO 13485
- Strong understanding of tissue electrode impedance, electrical stimulation circuits, and charge balancing
Benefits
- Compensation will be a blend of salary and equity that is commensurate with experience
- Participation in our 401k plan
- Health/Medical Insurance
- A laptop/workstation when you start
