Electrical Engineer

Atlanta, Georgia, USA                ·                Full time

Open Ephys is building a team that will make the future of scientific instruments equitable and open-source.

Join us to work on high-performance, open-source tools that read from and write to the brain. There are open positions in both the engineering team in Atlanta, Georgia and user-facing scientific team in Lisbon Portugal.

We are looking for a hands-on electrical engineer for firmware development, electronic board design, integration with custom ASICs, testing, and quality control. You will have the opportunity to propose and pursue complete projects as well as provide critical support to our expanding portfolio of neural recording instruments. You will be working on tools that push the boundaries of neuroscientific discovery over the next decade and that will be used by thousands of scientists around the world, from those at elite institutions to labs that were previously priced out of the scientific conversation.

About you:

  • You are creative and resourceful when identifying problems and solving them.
  • You are interested in thinking broadly about technologies that will enable future progress in neuroscience, and then figuring out how to turn abstract ideas into usable tools. (Note: you don’t need a background in neuroscience for this — we will provide that :).
  • You are excited to learn across the boundaries of your own expertise. Your day-to-day might be “in the weeds” of EE, but guiding principles and project definition should be a team activity.
  • You are excited about the future of open-source hardware.
  • You are interested in maintaining a healthy work/life balance.

Preferred qualifications (you do not need to meet all of these to apply!):

  • 2+ years of experience with embedded system design.
  • Strong EE & DSP fundamentals.
  • Proficient in Verilog and/or VHDL.
  • Knowledge of FPGA architectures, interconnection buses for IP Cores, and development environments.
  • Comfortable reading electrical schematics and datasheets.
  • HW/SW debugging skills with benchtop test equipment and integrated debuggers.
  • PCB layout experience for power- and size-constrained applications.
  • Knowledge of PCB design for high-speed communication.
  • Experience with PCB part selection, schematic design, and constraint definition.
  • Fluency with PCB CAD tools (KiCad, Altium, Eagle, and/or Allegro).
  • Experience with sensors, power management, and signal/power integrity.
  • Comfortable with common communication protocols (SPI, UART, I2C, etc.).
  • Experience with mechanical engineering CAD tools (Solidworks, AutoCAD, Fusion360, or similar).

What we offer:

  • Open Ephys is a workers cooperative. This means there are easy (and encouraged) routes to employee ownership with equal stake and voting power. You will directly determine the vision and future of Open Ephys.
  • An opportunity to make cutting-edge scientific instruments accessible across traditional economic barriers.
  • A recognized and respected brand in neuroscience – Open Ephys tools are some of the most widely used instruments in extracellular electrophysiology, and we develop tools in close collaboration with leading labs across the world.
  • An opportunity to normalize the use of open-source tools in cutting-edge neuroscience research.
  • Flexible time off + paid holidays.
  • 401(k) matching
