Job Description

Virginia Tech (VT) invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Developmental Neurobiology in the School of Neuroscience and at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, Virginia. We are seeking a candidate who will apply innovative approaches to fundamental and/or translational questions in developmental neurobiology to complement existing expertise in neuroscience across Virginia Tech, including at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (https://research.vtc.vt.edu) and in the School of Neuroscience (http://www.neuroscience.vt.edu).

The position will be located at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute on the university’s expanding health sciences campus in Roanoke, Virginia. Facilities at the research institute include a number of state-of-the-art core instruments including cellular/molecular imaging (including spinning disc confocal microscopy, standard laser scanning confocal microscopy, scanning block-face electron microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, and flow cytometry), multiple MRIs for human and animal research (including high field MR guided PET and MR guided focused ultrasound), biochemical and molecular biology cores, and rodent behavioral testing suites. Successful candidates will establish a nationally-competitive research program that can attract extramural funding, preferably from the NIH. Competitive salary, space, and start‐up packages will be provided.

Required Qualifications

All applicants must have earned a doctorate (Ph.D., M.D., MD/Ph.D., DVM) in a relevant discipline with post‐doctoral experience at the time of appointment. We are specifically interested in applicants whose research program will include modern approaches to understand the normal and/or pathological development of the nervous system. Applicants must demonstrate a strong background in neuroscience‐related research as evidenced by: (1) peer‐reviewed publications in excellent journals and prior funding through individual federal or foundation support; (2) a vision to establish an independent research program with a high likelihood to be competitive for extramural grant support; (3) demonstrated experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research; (4) vision, creativity, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference given to candidates with research programs that integrate and complement existing research programs in the School of Neuroscience and Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VT and relate to the programmatic needs of our undergraduate and graduate curricula.  Existing grant support, while a good indicator for future funding potential, is not required.
