The Genome Editor Protein Engineering group, a key component of the NIBR-San Diego Genome Engineering Platform, is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist with molecular biology and tissue culture skills. This is a great opportunity to join a group dedicated to discovering and engineering the next generation of cell therapies, and a global organization committed to bringing innovative medicines to patients. The San Diego Genome Engineering Platform comprises a core team of 20+ scientists with access to a wide repertoire of world-class collaborative functions including automation, protein expression, protein engineering, molecular biology, data science, pharmacology, and drug discovery.
The successful candidate will contribute from the bench and work with the larger team to build and characterize the efficiency and on-/off-target profiles of novel genome modifying effectors tailored for key therapeutic indications.
Your Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:
- Performing molecular cloning to generate plasmid constructs with novel genome modifying effectors using techniques including PCR, Gibson assembly, DNA purification and sequence validation
- Executing cell-based assays to characterize the activity of novel genome modifying effectors in a high-throughput format
- Maintaining, culturing, cryo-preservation, etc. of mammalian cell lines
- Contribute to the analysis of results and suggest new experiments
- Communicate and work effectively with diverse project teams to accomplish shared project goals
- Maintain organized, detailed, and accurate documentation of experiments
This position will be located at the San Diego, CA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely. This position will not require any travel as defined by the business (domestic and/ or international).

Minimum requirements
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE:
- BS/MS degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related discipline with 3+ years of academic or industry laboratory experience
- Hands-on experience in molecular cloning techniques for the generation of plasmid constructs and use of standard DNA software (e.g. Lasergene, Snapgene, Vector NTI, Geneious)
- Hands-on experience in tissue culture and aseptic technique
- Attention to detail, ability to work independently and communicate effectively, and an eagerness to learn new things
DESIRABLE:
- Working knowledge of CRISPR/Cas, TALE, ZF, or other genome targeting and modification technologies
- Experience with transfection/electroporation/transduction of mammalian cells
- Proficiency in sample preparation for next-generation DNA/RNA sequencing, including gDNA/RNA extraction from mammalian cells
- Ability to analyze and visualize experimental data using Microsoft Excel, GraphPad Prism, Spotfire, etc.
- Experience with Python and R
