Laboratory Operations (LO), situated within the Scientific Operations (SO) organization, is responsible for providing integrated programs and services that support our scientific community, and has a mission to enable the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research’s (NIBR) lab scientists to focus on science in the lab through data-driven, sustainable operational excellence and innovation.
As a Lab Manager you will support NIBR research and projects under the coordination of Scientific Operations. This position will interface with the scientists and supporting NIBR functions- including Health, Safety & Environment, Facilities and Real Estate, IT/NX, Procurement, and Finance.
The successful candidate must be organized, self-directed, and capable of handling a variety of tasks in a highly matrixed environment. This individual will be responsible for the implementation of the lab operations and activities relating to scientific laboratory logistics, safety, and laboratory space planning.
Your responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with NIBR researchers as well as with the NIBR Operations community to ensure alignment and execution of departmental and Scientific Operations objectives.
- Identify opportunities and lead or collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve operational efficiencies, logistics, and business processes.
- Oversee and maintain labs to ensure full compliance with Health Safety & Environment programs and regulations.
- Support business continuity initiatives.
- Drive Lab Operations and general NIBR lab supply channel implementations for: consumables, chemicals, media, and reagents.
- Create and manage POs and vendor invoicing. Some financial analysis may be required.
- Support Lab Equipment Management needs (inventory, compliance check, fleet life cycle management insights, etc.).
- Support the ordering and installation of lab equipment.
- Collaborate with IT/NX department on software and hardware upgrades and licensing.
- Manage lab ops; coordinate internal moves, recommend changes for space optimization, organize regular lab cleanouts.
- Adhere to sustainability best practices and significantly contribute to the development of such.

Minimum requirements
What you’ll bring to the role:
- B.S. or M.S. degree in a scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology, engineering.
- 3 to 5 years of experience managing lab operations or 5+ years working in a lab.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to present information to scientists and support teams.
- Experience with budget planning and management, expense reconciliation, vendor contract negotiations, and business data analysis. Comprehension of financial systems is preferred.
- Enthusiasm for drug discovery and dedication to working in a team-oriented environment to contribute to shared project and organizational goals.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced drug discovery environment with positivity and persistence regardless of challenges.
- Ability to exercise independent discretion and judgment to solve problems.
- Strong understanding of the processes and protocols required in a scientific research organization.
- Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook is required. Experience with SharePoint and Teams is preferred
