Are you looking for a PhD position with a strong interdisciplinary focus, and do you have a strong interest in (cognitive) neuroscience? The Integrative Model-based Cognitive Neuroscience (IMCN) Research Group in the Psychology Department is looking for a PhD candidate that will combine MRI, microscopy and image processing to create 3D reconstructions of the human Alzheimer brain.
The IMCN Research Group is a group of world-leading cognitive neuroscientists who aim to bridge the gap between neuroscience and cognition. Members of the IMCN have a set of skills ranging from neuroanatomy and neurochemistry via neuroimaging to mathematical cognitive modelling.
What are you going to do
As part of the PhD trajectory, you will carry out microscopy processing of whole human-brain specimens, digitization of the microscopy slices, subsequent image processing, and statistical modeling of the neuropathological profiles. Prior to microscopy processing ultra-high field MRI images will be acquired, and quantitative comparisons will be made across imaging modalities. You will work together with other researchers within the group, and other universities to map whole-brain neuropathology in brain donors with Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
You will be hired via the University of Amsterdam and collaborate with researchers at the VU University, Utrecht University, Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (Amsterdam), Leiden University, Erasmus MC and the Max Planck Institute for Cognition and Brain sciences in Leipzig (GE).
Your experience and profile:
You have:
- A MSc in neuroscience or similar;
- Affinity with histological techniques;
- A strong interest in image processing;
- Strong written and oral communication skills;
- Strong social skills and professional flexibility to work within a team of interdisciplinary researchers.
What can we offer you
The position concerns temporary employment of 38 hours per week for a period of 4 year. The initial employment is for one year. Following a positive assessment and barring altered circumstances, this term will be extended by a maximum of 36 months, which should result in the conferral of a doctorate. We will put together a curriculum which will also include the opportunity to attend training courses and both national and international events. You will also be tasked with teaching Bachelor’s students.
Your salary will be €2541 gross per month in the first year and will increase to €3247 in the final year, based on full-time employment and in keeping with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
