Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow (Sahani Group)

Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow in Theoretical Neuroscience

Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, Howland Street, London        ·        Full time

We invite applications for a postdoctoral Training Fellowship under the guidance of Professor Maneesh Sahani and Professor Jennifer Linden (UCL Ear Institute), focused on an investigation of the computational principles that underlie the formation of perceptual representations. The goal is to apply state-of-the-art unsupervised inferential approaches to learn models of acoustic environments, and evaluate the fidelity with which they reproduce neural recordings in the auditory cortex from animals raised in either routine or altered acoustic settings.

You will be primarily responsible for the execution of the project (with opportunities for co-supervision of students), presentation at conferences and seminars, and publication in suitable venues. The research will involve active collaboration with experimentalists at the UCL Ear Institute. You will have the opportunity to participate in the design of systems-neuroscience experiments and to observe data collection.

This post is initially funded for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension at the end of the period. The pay scale for a Grade 7 role is £38,308 – £46,155 and Grade 8 role £47,414 – £55,805.

You should have a strong quantitative background in theoretical neuroscience, machine learning, statistics, computer science, physics or engineering; a record of publication in highly respected journals and conferences; and must hold a PhD in a relevant field by the agreed start date of this position.

Please see this document for a detailed job description and person specification.

Academic enquiries should be directed to Maneesh Sahani (maneesh ‘at’ gatsby.ucl.ac.uk) or Jennifer Linden (j.linden ‘at’ ucl.ac.uk).

For any other enquiries contact Mike Sainsbury (m.sainsbury ‘at’ ucl.ac.uk).

To apply visit UCL Jobs (Ref B02-04424) and click “Apply Now” to submit your CV (including names of three academic referees) and in the Attachments section (Research Paper 1) a statement covering research accomplishments.

The application deadline is 28 February 2023.

We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL’s workforce in this type of role. Interest from women and those from an ethnic minority background is particularly welcome, as they are under-represented within UCL at these levels.
