The Carver College of Medicine Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology (Dr. Carter lab) is seeking a Research Assistant. This Research Assistant will assist in projects related to the study of the biological mechanisms and applications of electromagnetic fields. This position will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, engineers, and scientists to uncover the biological effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields. This is a unique position that offers the opportunity to serve at the forefront of bioelectronic medicines and to make significant impacts in the development of breakthrough medical technologies for clinical testing. This position will have the opportunity to work on translational science using animal models which will be tested in clinical trials.    

 

Position Summary:

  • Design and carry out experiments to test laboratory hypotheses and advance the laboratory’s research goals
  • Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocols, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of research protocols
  • Perform statistical analysis and interpretation of data and qualitative analysis
  • Maintain detailed and accurate notes of experimental results
  • Develop protocols of experimental approaches
  • Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines
  • Provide ongoing training on basic and new lab techniques and protocols for employees

Much of the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborations are fostered and coordinated through major research centers, institutes, and programs. Many faculty members are internationally renowned for their research. Two faculty members are Howard Hughes Institute Investigators, 12 are members of the Institute of Medicine and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

Type of Position: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, neuroscience, chemical engineering, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience
  • Ability to execute and follow-through to completion and documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate hypotheses
  • Ability to multitask effectively, prioritize multiple projects
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • 1+ year experience working with molecular biological and biochemical techniques
  • 1+ year Experience with cell culture and animal models
  • Analysis of mass spectrometry data
  • Experience using data analysis software, including R, python, graphpad, matlab, tracefinder
