Full Job Description

The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics is looking for a Clinical Trials Research Assistant/Data Manager to assist in the performance of a neuroscience research project to enroll and evaluate patients with Parkinson’ disease to investigate speech and motor performance. This position will serve as a point-of-contact and coordinator for patients and their families to arrange study evaluations and testing sessions, as well as liaise between patients and the PI and aid with data collection, pre-processing, cataloging, and uploading for analysis. Additional functions may include: development and implementation of data processing pipelines, participating in subject recruitment and enrollment, administrating study protocols as directed, assisting in maintaining compliance with regulatory guidelines and documentation, gathering information and assisting in the preparation of material for inclusion in reports and publications, and performing leadership and financial responsibilities as indicated.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of research techniques and procedures relating to the performance of neuroscience and clinical research in a medical setting.
  • Perform all data processing tasks, including running image processing scripts and scoring and entry of collected data.
  • Consult with researchers to assist in developing data collection and management plans; assist in designing forms and scripts to facilitate the collection and tracking of study participant data and study procedures.
  • Assist in the implementation of survey processing using computerized tools
  • Assist in the maintenance of computerized databases and coordination of data processes from various sites/centers/studies.
  • Assist in managing data validation, query resolutions and the reporting of data; conduct audit to assess quality assurance. Develop procedures for on-site data audits; participate in audits; design and generate reports for use in data audits; summarize results of audits and write reports.
  • May assist with clinical research activities, including: screen, recruit, enroll and obtain informed consent; gauge understanding of study expectations; prepare and administer assessments per study protocol and assist participants in completion of project forms and questionnaires.
  • May manage the scheduling of research appointments, including arrangement of travel, on-site room and equipment reservations, coordination of the test day agenda, and confirmation of arrangements with scheduled study participants.
  • Respond to inquiries about assigned projects and present at informational sessions and panel discussions. Prepare and submit posters and abstracts, presentations and articles.
  • If necessary, perform library research on specified topics and prepare bibliographies and abstracts according to instructions. Assist in the preparation of material for reports to be written by faculty and staff on research projects. Prepare information upon request for reporting to funding source(s).

 

Supervision Received: Supervision is received from research staff and/or principal investigator (Dr. Jeremy Greenlee).

Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision is exercised as directed over assigned research and/or support staff.

Percent Time: 100%

Education & Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Computer experience, including word processing, spreadsheet, and EMR usage
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or health science field, Neuroscience degree preferred.
  • Experience working with patients
  • Familiarity with Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes and documentation
  • Experience with Parkinson’s disease
  • Experience with deep brain stimulation
