  • Research activity experience.
  • Experience in operating equipment, carrying out test procedures and using special methods for data collection and interpretation.

Experience working on a research study or with patients.

 

Brief Description of Duties:

The Research Support Specialist (RSS) will participate in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goal of the study is to understand the role of certain types of neurons in Alzheimer’s disease. The RSS will be part of a study team dedicated to improving the lives of those with neurodegenerative and psychiatric disease.  The RSS will collaborate with clinicians, image analysts and researchers in the Center for Understanding Biology using Imaging Technology (CUBIT).  Within CUBIT, multiple brain imaging studies, sponsored by the National Institute of Aging (NIA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), within the NIH, and other funding agencies, are performed in order to better understand, diagnose and treat illnesses like Alzheimer’s disease and major depressive disorder. The RSS will work with human research participants including participants with memory impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. The RSS will directly interact with study participants, including recruiting participants, performing screenings and scheduling participants appointments. The RSS will accompany participants to imaging appointments at Stony Brook Medicine, including Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans.  These PET and MRI images allow examination of brain structure and function.  The RR will also carefully maintain participant data in an electronic and written form (database and documents) and ensure compliance with all Institutional Review Board policies. The CUBIT environment is cutting-edge, collaborative and educational.  The role of the RSS is critical in ensuring a calm and pleasant experience for all participants.  As such, the RSS is a critical part of the study team. Following their CUBIT experience and training, those in the RSS position have high success rates in acceptance to doctoral programs, nursing and medical school.

 

Duties:

  • Recruit, screen and schedule appointments for research participants.
  • Monitor participant progress; and prepare agendas for meetings discussing participant progress.
  • Accompany participants to appointments,
  • Ensure that supplies are present and available to the research study. 
  • Maintain collected data in electronic/paper databases.
  • Communicating with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the study team.
  • Collect biological samples, including blood sampling.
  • Other duties as assigned.
