The Vice President will lead the development and execution of the medical affairs strategies and tactics in Rare Disease, including responsibilities for the HQ based Medial Affairs team and the field based Rare Disease Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team. This will be accomplished by working in close collaboration with colleagues in Commercial, Regulatory, Market Access, Clinical Development, Corporate Affairs, Patient Advocacy, and other key cross functions. This position reports to the SVP, Medical Affairs.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific and medical leadership, including development of strategic plans, identifying specific unmet medical needs, and data gaps for products in rare disease area
  • Supervises field based medical affairs strategies and tactics, including oversight of the MSL team with the MSL Rare Disease Director reporting directly into this Vice President role. This includes thought leader engagement; medical conference exhibits and support; and other activities conducted by the MSL team that ensure effective and compliant scientific exchange conducted by the MSL team to meet the needs of researchers, advocacy groups, clinicians, and other external and internal stakeholders
  • Establish appropriate strategic partnerships with centers of excellence, advocacy groups and KOLs in areas of scientific interest
  • Own the design and execution of the medical plan and tactics including Life Cycle Management, working in close collaboration with other functional colleagues, including Medical Affairs subfunctions, regulatory, commercial, and clinical development
  • Lead the strategic development and execution of post-approval phase 4 studies, including generation of Real-World Evidence, working closely with the Health Economics group
  • Involvement with key HCPs in the exchange of scientific and medical information including Advisory Boards and presentations at national and international meetings
  • Develop and maintain close professional relationships with Key Opinion Leaders and emerging scientific leaders in the community
  • Assists in publication activities, including review and approval of abstracts and manuscripts, publication strategy development and collaboration with both internal and external authors as needed
  • Contribute to discussions with R&D colleagues and ensure that MA (including HEOR) perspectives are incorporated into development plans
  • Serve as the internal medical affairs data expert on Acadia’s product data and disease states, capable of presenting and teaching complex data to both internal and external stakeholders 

 

Qualifications 

M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree with work experience in medical affairs in rare disease and a minimum 15 years of progressive experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry, with at least 10 years of increasing leadership responsibilities and accountabilities, including in launch planning and execution.

  • Strong strategic leadership and execution abilities
  • Ability to work closely with HCPs in the rare disease space and provide valuable scientific exchange in the areas of clinical research, patient and caregiver burden, disease landscape and payer value
  • Demonstrates complex problem-solving skills and ability to manage more complex problems within TA or product teams.
  • Experience managing people with situational leadership skills and ability to develop and retain talent
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong formal presentation skills.
  • Excellent planning and organization skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and integrity, represent the company’s high ethics, moral behavior, and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain scientific credibility while being commercially supportive, and to communicate scientific results and effectively respond to data queries from customers and/or consultants.
  • Knowledge of scientific methods, research design and medical practices and procedures.
  • Ability to travel (35%).
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, etc.) and knowledge of database management (Veeva Vault, etc.)

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, see, talk or hear in a standard office environment. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Employee must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in accordance with our policy and in order to meet any independent vaccination requirements that our clients and client facilities may have.

The salary range for this role is $328,000.00 to $377,100.00. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance, and location. In addition to a competitive base salary, this position is also eligible for a discretionary bonus and equity awards based on factors such as individual and organizational performance.
