What You’ll Do:
As a member of Calm’s engineering organization leadership team, you will:
- Create a technical strategy for ML/AI, Data Science, and Data Eng at Calm
- Create a technical strategy for shared infrastructure and services that are shared across Calm
- Work with engineering peers, product and business stakeholders to align on the requirements and business needs
- Manage the engineering teams, own the budget for the team, remove roadblocks, own the execution and quality
- Partner with your engineering peers and the CTO to solve engineering-wide problems
- Manage and grow the engineering organization: You will expand, up-level, and manage engineers (people managers and individual contributors), including those embedded on other teams
- Give the team clear performance objectives and goals, offer effective feedback and coach them in their ongoing development
- Use the engineering process and tools to make week-to-week execution effective, transparent and predictable. Ensure our process works for us — prioritization, estimates, deadlines, expectation-setting, road mapping, and so on
- Identify the open questions in our approach to architecture and technology, and work across Calm engineering to document on an effective approach
- Nurture an evolvable architecture that nimbly supports product and business expansion
- Take the lead on defining and rolling out several engineering organization processes or practices over course
- Understand the “buy vs build” tradeoff, and make strategic judgments about where to invest the team’s resources architecturally
- Work with senior leadership to get aligned with company-wide goals, and then use this context to prioritize backend initiatives appropriately
Who You Are:
- 15+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong organization-building background with a focus on innovation, infrastructure development, and team motivation & building
- Demonstrated track record of recruiting, managing, motivating, and retaining a multi-site global engineering team including contractors
- High level of executive presence demonstrated by the ability to act as the company’s technical representative to cross-functional leadership
- You have managed teams of 50+ for at least 5 years
- You have a proven record and experience in AI/ML, Data Eng and Data Science (5+ years on the Director or VP level)
- You have built and operated teams that own shared infrastructure and services utilized by multiple product lines (5+ years on the Director or VP level)=
- You understand how to build architecture and scale it. Proven record of scaling services
- You have a track record of execution
- You are willing to get your hands dirty, it is a startup after all

The anticipated salary range for this position is $325,000 – $375,000. The base salary range represents the low and high end of Calm’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate’s skills, experience and other qualifications. This role is also eligible for equity + comprehensive benefits + 401k + flexible time off.
