Responsibilities

General Purpose:

Performs diverse duties related to all aspects of research in audiology and basic sensory neuroscience with human subjects. Leverages background in audiology for hearing assessment, interacting with human subjects, and providing clinical insights and perspective. Ensures smooth lab function, compliance, and record-keeping, and assists with training of lab members.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manages and executes scientific studies –– Assists with planning and executing experiments to improve the diagnostic auditory brainstem response; Provides clinical perspective to the PI and lab members as subject matter expert; Performs data collection using a range of experimental tools (evoked potentials, including auditory brainstem response and full-cap EEG; behavioral responses; eye-tracking; virtual reality); Assists PI with interpretation of data and manuscript preparation; Develops and documents standard operating procedures for cutting-edge tools developed and deployed in the lab; Executes custom programs written in the lab (training provided if necessary); Ensures all protocols are followed.
  • Interfaces with human subjects — Performs audiometric assessment for human subjects (including audiogram, otoacoustic emissions, tympanometry); Recruits subjects according to specific goals and audiometric and other criteria; Works with the audiology clinic to recruit patients; Schedules subjects and communicates with them before their appointment; Manages the lab email and voicemail.
  • Ensures smooth lab function — Oversees day-to-day lab activities; Develops and improves lab systems; Manages the calendars; Maintains equipment; Keeps physical (workroom, filing cabinet, booths) organized and maintained; Manages inventory stocks, towel service.
  • Performs record-keeping, compliance, administrative tasks — Follows human ethics protocols and performs associated record-keeping; Keeps records related to federally funded projects; Manages online subject databases (e.g., RedCap); Ensures HIPAA compliance; Serves as administrative lead (oversee petty cash, track expenses); Serves as point of contact for purchasing and reimbursement.
  • Trains lab members — Acts as a mentor for junior scientists in the lab; Provides training to new lab members as part of their onboarding and incremental refresh training on lab protocols and standards; Stays abreast of and educates lab members on emerging trends in audiology.
  • Represents the lab — Serves as point of contact with human subjects, ensures comfort and safety at all times; Corresponds with administrators from the River Campus and Medical Center; Interfaces with the audiology clinic at URMC, attends monthly education meeting; Liaises with other labs with which we share space/equipment

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Audiology required
  • D. or Ph.D. in Audiology preferred
  • 3 years of professional experience in audiology clinic or completed externship required
  • Experience conducting a research study preferred
  • Exposure to a programming language preferred
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience above required
  • Audiologic assessment (e.g., audiometry, otoacoustic emissions) required
  • Human evoked potentials required
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills, including written communication required
