  • Post-doctoral Researcher in Machine Learning (full-time or part-time) 
  • Post-doctoral Researcher in Robotics (full-time or part-time)

About the positions 

The Learning Agents and Robots (LEAR) research group (https://lear.cyens.org.cy/) conducts research on artificial intelligence and its intersection with robotics, focusing on creating software agents and robots that learn to predict and understand the world, solve tasks, accumulate skills, interact with humans or other agents, and make adaptive decisions in complex, dynamic and uncertain environments. To achieve these goals, the group investigates approaches from machine learning (e.g., deep learning, reinforcement learning, continual learning), evolutionary computation (e.g., quality-diversity optimization), robotic simulation, perception, planning and control, among others. Our newly-established robotics lab is currently populated with a Unitree A1 quadruped robot and 4 Parrot Anafi drones. 

The LEAR group is looking for research associates in machine learning and robotics. The successful candidates will work under the supervision of the LEAR MRG Leader, Dr. Vassilis Vassiliades. 

 

Responsibilities of Research Associates:  

  • Carry out fundamental or applied research in Machine Learning and/or Robotics. 
  • Participate in currently active research projects in the research group. 
  • Participate in the preparation of reports, deliverables, research papers, and presentations. 
  • Disseminate research findings. 
  • Participate in the preparation of grant proposals. 
  • Participate in innovation activities related to the exploitation of research outputs. 
  • Attend technical and non-technical training courses and workshops as required. 
  • Undertake any other required duties based on projects’ needs. 

 

General qualifications and requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree and postgraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science or Engineering) from an accredited institution. 
  • PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Robotics). 
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or C++. 
  • High-impact research publications on relevant topics. 
  • Experience with Machine/Deep Learning frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, Tensorflow, PyTorch, JAX; a must for Machine Learning candidates). 
  • Experience with robotic simulators (e.g., Gazebo, PyBullet, Isaac Sim), physics engines, ROS/ROS2, or physical robots (a must for Robotics candidates). 
  • Experience with evolutionary algorithms, reinforcement learning, computer vision, speech processing or natural language processing will be considered an advantage (for Machine Learning candidates). 
  • Experience with model-predictive control, legged robots, or sensor fusion will be considered an advantage (for Robotics candidates). 
  • Experience with embedded systems or mobile app development will be considered an advantage. 
  • Strong mathematical background will be considered an advantage. 
  • Previous relevant industrial / innovation / entrepreneurship experience and interest will be considered an advantage.  
  • Previous grant-writing experience will be considered an advantage. 
  • Excellent written and oral English-language skills.  
  • For non-EU applicants a work permit will be required.

  • Ability to interact with relevant partners / stakeholders, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

  • Very good analytical skills coupled with attention to detail.  
  • Adaptable, hands-on and results driven.
