The Ontario Brain Institute (OBI) is a provincially‐funded, not‐for‐profit initiative seeking to maximize the impact of neuroscience and establish Ontario as a world leader in brain research, commercialization and care. Convergent partnerships are created between researchers, clinicians, industry, patients, and their advocates to foster discovery and deliver innovative products and services that improve the lives of those living with brain disorders.

Our Integrated Discovery Programs (IDPs) consist of five research programs that integrate many stakeholders, science disciplines and data, with the goal of driving multi-disciplinary, patient-focused research across Ontario. To further integrate and promote collaboration, OBI created a large-scale neuroinformatics platform, called Brain-CODE, to capture, manage, and analyze all data produced by our IDPs.

Expected Duration: October 1, 2018 – April 26, 2019 (30 weeks)

Internship Description:

The IDP Neuroinformatics Internship is carried out in partnership with the Ontario Brain Institute (OBI) and its Integrated Discovery Programs.  The Neuroinformatics Intern will be placed within one of the five Integrated Discovery Programs: cerebral palsy (CP-NET), depression (CAN-BIND), epilepsy (EpLink), neurodevelopmental disorders (POND) or neurodegeneration (ONDRI).

The Intern will work with various aspects of big data management in relation to OBI’s Brain-CODE neuroinformatics platform.  These unique opportunities will allow candidates to explore the world of big data for science and health by gaining exposure to how information from individual research initiatives comes together to impact our understanding within and across diseases, health care provision, and how data needs to be processed for integrative analytics of multiple data types across the different brain disorders.

The Intern will participate in an on-boarding Brain-CODE training program designed to familiarize them with the tools and programs they will be utilizing during the internship.  As the internship progresses, candidates will have the opportunity to participate in additional training opportunities as they arise.

Interns will be involved in identifying and providing solutions for a range of data management related processes, such as data pipelines for upload of various data modalities ranging from clinical scales to genetics to imaging, and facilitating data curation in preparation for large scale integrative analysis.

Overarching activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the different data capture tools available through the Brain-CODE neuroinformatics platform
  • Acting as a liaison between various researcher stakeholders, ranging from clinicians to coordinators to basic scientists, and the Brain-CODE team, including the service group building Brain-CODE with OBI, Indoc Research
  • Identifying and reporting challenges, and developing solutions for the input, management, and curation of research data
  • Collating, entering and transferring data, creating electronic case report forms (eCRFs) in conjunction with study leads, and developing dashboards to visualize study data
  • Becoming familiar with research data governance, research ethics, as well as privacy and security policies and procedures

Internship Requirements:

The internship is best suited to recent graduates in computer science, informatics, engineering, and/or neuroscience related fields, with a keen interest in big data informatics and neuroscience. You exhibit well-developed written and verbal communication skills, the ability to effectively time manage, excel in both independent and team work, and have exposure to web searching and word processing programs.  Experience with statistical programs, informatics and analytics capabilities is an asset.  Applicants may be required to travel within Ontario.

How To Apply:

Interested and qualified candidates are invited to submit a resume and cover letter, no later than August 19, 2018.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Ontario Brain Institute and its partner organizations are committed to providing accommodations for applicants at any stage of the recruitment and hiring process in accordance with the institutes’ respective policies, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
