As OpenBCI grows, so will the complexity of our products. The mechanical engineer will be responsible for bringing our next generation of biosensing headwear and wearable devices to life.
Primary Responsibilities
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to generate product concepts and prototypes using in-house rapid-prototying tools (FDM and SLA printers)
- Contribute to the creation of technical specifications and product definition
- Test and evaluate designs for manufacturability and performance
- Ensure high-quality products are delivered on-time, meeting all reliability, regulatory, and safety requirements
- Work closely with manufacturing partners to optimize part design and production processes
- Executing xVT builds, including procuring components, assembling, testing, and validating prototypes
- Drive full documentation of mechanical design, including BOM, drawings, and procedures
- Stay on top of emerging technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes
- Be a bridge between internal and external hardware design, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to drive industry best practices
Qualifications
- Bachelor/Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
5+ years of experience designing, implementing, and shipped at least one product - Demonstrated ability in detailed part design for a variety of materials (soft goods/foam/fabric, flexible and rigid plastic, flexible circuits, metal, joining, multi-material, etc.) and functions (structural, cosmetic, dynamic etc.) in wearable devices
- In-depth experience in mechanical design and related manufacturing processes
- DfX (design for manufacturing, assembly, cost, etc.)
- Professional experience with 3D design tools, such as SolidWorks, OnShape, Pro/E or NX, including solid and surface modeling.
- Experience converting ID models into master models
- Experience defining geometry for and integrating PCBA, FPC, rigid-flex, assemblies, including connector positioning and bi-directional ECAD/MCAD exports and imports
- Ability to identify, root cause, and make design improvements
- Ability to leverage manufacturing data to identify design and assembly issues to drive continuous quality improvement
- Experience in color, materials, and finishes designed for consumer/medical/research product
- Statistical tolerance analysis techniques, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing
Preferred Skills
- Experience with ergonomics and wearable design
- Experience with designing head-mounted displays and headset design
- Surfacing experience
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of non-invasive electrophysiological tool design (EMG, ECG, EEG)
- PDM and PLM experience, including best practices for managing shared assemblies with multiple engineers
- Experience with medical device regulations such as FDA or ISO 13485
Compensation
- Base salary: $90,000 to $111,500
The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position based at our Brooklyn, NY headquarters. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including but not limited to individual performance, business objectives, and if the location for the job changes.
