Responsibilities

The Neuroscience Publications Department at Barrow Neurological Institute leads the academic publishing industry in author services focused entirely on the neurosciences. We provide editorial and media expertise to support residents, fellows, attending physicians, and researchers in the neurosurgery, neurology, neuroradiology, and neuropsychology departments at Barrow. Our illustrators, animators, graphic artists, and multimedia specialists work closely with authors to create elegant, accurate visual content using the latest industry standards and technology, including a state-of-the-art render farm to achieve higher visibility and faster publication. The production team maintains an archive of over 28,000 illustrations, images, videos, and animations that are available to internal, as well as external, researchers and authors. Our team of medical editors checks manuscripts for logical flow, data consistency, word use, and sentence structure. The editorial coordinators help authors manage their manuscripts from formatting through online submission, peer review, and page proofs.

Barrow Neurological Institute is seeking a Medical Animator / Illustrator to join our team as part of the NEUROSCIENCE PUBLICATIONS Department. The candidate will produce animations, stills, and digital models to support the academic publishing mission of Barrow.

 

Located in Phoenix, AZ, this is an in-person hybrid position with 1 day per week remote. Individuals must live within driving distance from the Barrow campus. Animators regularly meet with surgeons, researchers, and faculty during project development. Additionally, our team participates in regular department tours and occasional demonstrations at company events.

 

Qualifications

Minimum
  • BA/BS in Scientific Illustration or related field
  • Expertise (two years experience preferred) as medical illustrator. Good knowledge of video and audio recording, editing and formatting, and associated electronics and operating systems required.
Preferred
  • Masters in medical illustration preferred. MA or MS in Medical Illustration 
  • Expertise (two years experience preferred) with 3D computer animation and modeling software.
  • Certified Medical Illustrator 
  • A link to your portfolio is required.
  • Knowledge of video and audio recording, editing and formatting, and associated electronics and operating systems
    Proficiency in Maxon ZBrush and a segmentation software
Desired Skills
  • Storyboarding and storytelling
  • Animation and sense of timing
  • Illustration
  • Refined shading and lighting
  • Experience with effects or simulation
  • Interest in technology
  • Knowledge of copyright
  • Proactively communicate with clients

The following software skills are preferable (but not required): Autodesk Maya, Blackmagic Design Fusion Studio or DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Creative Suite, SideFX Houdini, V-Ray render engine, Substance Designer or Painter, Blender, C4D, or 3ds Max, a render manager software, Python, Lua, MEL scripting, Unreal, Unity, Godot, Mudbox, Wrap 3D, a database software, Linux.
