Systems Neuroscientist
Science/Neuroscience · Bellevue, WA · Full Time
Starfish Neuroscience is an early-stage startup advancing the science and engineering of brain interfaces. Basic and clinical neuroscience has shown how targeted modulation of brain activity patterns can create precise changes in physiology, affect, or cognition. We see that this ability can be harnessed to treat a wide range of conditions, from movement disorders to mood disorders and from poor sleep to chronic pain. Our mission is to build the foundational technology for safe, flexible, and reliable neuromodulation and to deploy that technology as precision therapies, easily available to the people who need them.
We hire people who are able to work both independently and collaboratively, who have deep expertise in their domain and broad curiosity and skills beyond, and who have demonstrated technical or professional excellence.
We are seeking an experienced Systems Neuroscientist who has overseen research and other projects to work on site in our Bellevue, WA office.
Responsible for:
- Performing basic and translational research with the goal of improving human health.
- Designing and executing experiments investigating the ability of different neuromodulation strategies to interact with functional brain circuits in animal models.
- Evaluating the performance of device prototypes in-vivo.
- Designing state-of-art experimental rigs for neurophysiological study of brain circuit function and neuromodulation.
- Working with engineers to specify device requirements for research and development and clinical devices, and to provide actionable feedback about device performance.
- Assisting in the formation of the technical direction of the company’s research and development program.
- Teaching principles of laboratory procedures to technicians and other personnel.
- Critical thinking, active listening, deductive reasoning.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a closely-related discipline and five years of practical experience as a neuroscientist.
- Deep neuroscientific knowledge of functional circuits within the brain.
- Extensive experience with modern tools for studying brain circuits, including electrophysiological and optical techniques.
- Expertise in designing, implementing, and performing in-vivo experiments with animal models using large-scale neural recording and population data analysis.
- Proficiency in Python, with a focus on techniques and tools for data analysis.
- Functional experience with principles of laboratory procedures and the skills to set up a lab.
- Familiarity with different types of neuromodulation, such as magnetic, acoustic, electrical or optical.
- Experience in recruiting, hiring and developing teams and organizations.
- Curiosity and a willingness to learn from others.
- The ability to successfully work collaboratively in a flat organizational structure.
- Able to function as an individual contributor, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and work with vendors, contractors and related disciplines.
