Development Sciences Informatics is seeking a talented and experienced Data Engineer to build the foundation of our data infrastructure and solutions to improve accessibility, efficiency, governance, and data quality. Development Sciences (DevSci) is a translational science organization that plays a critical role in Genentech Research and Early Development as well as late stage development of our products at Roche. DevSci supports drug discovery and development projects across all therapeutic areas from discovery to launch and beyond. We are poised at a unique time when large volumes of complex and varied internal and external data needs to be readily accessible to ensure that swift interpretation and decision making can occur. These data impact decisions in ongoing preclinical and clinical programs, and provide key knowledge to inform new target discovery. DevSci Informatics is accountable for leading the strategy and execution around data lifecycle management, data standards, analytics infrastructure, ongoing data operations and informatics systems.

As a Data Engineer, you will design, develop and deploy scalable data pipelines and scalable and resilient cloud platform capabilities for data integration, analytics, and AI/ML efforts while in close collaboration with data scientists and consumers of the data to support groundbreaking therapeutics.  

• Minimum of 5 years professional applicable experience required
• Experience in healthcare or life sciences industries strongly desired
• Demonstrated strengths in technical oversight and driving initiatives
• A hands-on engineer who is willing to get involved in a decision-making process to work on continuous improvement in the area
• Formulates and implements tactics and strategies for data engineering initiatives
• Scale and Optimize data pipelines, database/data warehouse solutions
• Identify patterns and develop general purpose framework and addressing scalability requirements 
• Must be proactive, demonstrate initiative, and be a logical thinker
• Actively seeks out new technologies or novel uses for existing technologies
• Must be team oriented with strong collaboration, prioritization, and adaptability skills required

Competencies and Qualifications:

• Expert in designing and developing scalable pipelines, MLOps tools, frameworks and platforms for diverse Data Science projects
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS
• Experience with designing and developing DevOps
• Able to define software development practices for complex efforts
• Experience working with agile methodologies and cross-functional teams (Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Developers, Test Engineers)
• Demonstrates leadership and active pursuit of optimizing CI/CD process and tools, testing frameworks and practices
• Build data pipelines to support development, experimentation, CI/CD, verification/validation, and monitoring of AI/ML models
• Deploy and maintain data pipelines in production reliably and efficiently
• Proficiency in Python and/or R used for ML and automation tasks.
• Experience in operationalization of Data Science projects (MLOps) using at least one of the popular frameworks or platforms (e.g. Kubeflow, AWS Sagemaker, MLFlow).
• Experience with container technology (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience in operationalization of AI/ML models
• Good understanding of R&D processes and scientific data life cycle is a plus.
• Deftly crafts communications with needs of specific stakeholders in mind.
• Excellent analytical, and written/verbal communication skills. Self-motivated, proactive and a team player.
• Partner with the Data Scientists and cross functional teams to solve complex problems and create unique solutions
• Degree in computer sciences or related field.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $156,300-$290,300 hiring range.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
