Position Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Assistant Scientist to join Patrick Ganzer’s NIH-funded Bioelectronic Medicines laboratory (located at the University of Miami; co-affiliated with The Miami Project To Cure Paralysis & the Department of Biomedical Engineering). The position is for at least 5 years and is expected to be a long-term role with room for advancement (e.g., Assistant Scientist -> Associate Scientist -> Scientist).

The laboratory leverages preclinical facilities at The Miami Project To Cure Paralysis, as well as cutting edge clinical facilities at the new Lynn Rehab Center.

 

Ganzer’s teams have published their neural engineering work in several high impact journals such as Cell, eLife, Nature Human Behavior, Stroke, Nature Communications, Brain Stimulation, and Science Advances.

The main project for the candidate will be assessing new applications of closed-loop nerve stimulation for treating disease & dysfunction (similar research: [1 & 2]). The research will involve preclinical and / or clinical experiments.

 

Skills Needed:

  • Candidate should possess an understanding of systems physiology, neuroscience, neuromodulation, and coding (e.g., MATLAB for data analysis).
  • Candidate must have a good record of productivity and publications.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with machine learning models is desirable.
  • Proficiency in oral and written English required.

 

Duties:

  • Lead ‘team science’ projects (design, management, & execution).
    • The main project involves Ph.D. students, faculty (across multiple departments such as Biomedical Engineering, The Miami Project, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), and clinicians.
  • Develop and implement new research techniques.
  • Write peer-reviewed manuscripts and construct posters for national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to technology commercialization activities.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, or other related field + 2 or more years of experience (e.g., as a post-doctoral fellow or researcher in industry).
  • Proven experience in neural engineering or related research (preclinical and / or clinical).
  • Willing to learn new techniques, grow, and at times work outside of core expertise.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to finish complex projects.
  • Emerging ability to independently execute complex research.
  • Speak and write fluently in English.
