Position Summary
The Outreach Associate executes SfN’s outreach initiatives by working closely with team members and project managers on in-person and virtual neuroscience outreach and departmental support.
Essential Job Functions
- Public Outreach Projects including:

- Executing SfN/BrainFacts.org’s presence at key outreach and educational conferences such as:
- NSTA
- USA SEF
- AAAS Family Science Days
- Booth at Annual Meeting
- Local science events
- Assisting in the development and administration of educational conference workshop programming.
- Maintaining and building relationships with key organizations and institutions involved in public education and outreach.
- Processing, tracking, and fulfilling all requests for SfN’s public information and outreach materials.
- Maintaining the Find a Neuroscientist Database and coordinating email and telephone responses to public inquiries including those from education communities and neuroscience professionals.
- Executing SfN/BrainFacts.org’s presence at key outreach and educational conferences such as:
- Education Outreach projects including:

- Developing and executing a Back-to-School webinar in collaboration with the Editorial Board and appropriate SfN departments
- Enhancing BrainFacts.org audience pages by finding and creating scientifically vetted resources for educators.
- Annual Meeting projects including:
- Leading the Brain Awareness Campaign Event
- Developing a list of potential outreach speakers and administering their attendance and inclusion in the meeting program
- Ensuring appropriate function facilities are in place, working with Meeting Services
- Advertising and registering the poster participants
- Administering the Social Issues Roundtable
- Working with Meeting Services, initiate call for proposals, review and organize proposals for committee consideration. Facilitate conversations leading to committee selection of proposal.
- Work with SIR panel to plan their roundtable and develop content ideas
- Arrange travel and housing logistics for the panelists
- Work with team members to prepare recorded presentation for inclusion on BrainFacts.org
- Organize shipping of all outreach materials for distribution at the booth.
- Leading the Brain Awareness Campaign Event
- Brain Awareness Week Projects including:
- Working with team members and external departments, develop and execute webinar or other virtual event celebrating Brain Awareness Week in March
- Working with team members, administer all aspects of the Brain Awareness Week Video Contest including launching the program during Brain Awareness Week, organizing the judging panel and judging process, and administering prizes for winners.
- Departmental Support
- Assist in reporting to the BrainFacts.org Editorial Board, the Public Education and Communication Committee, and Council
- Assist in organizing virtual and in-person meetings
- Work with team members, volunteer leadership, and individuals across the organization
Supervisory Responsibilities

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum 2 years work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in education (in a classroom or informal, i.e., museum, summer camp, etc.) preferred
- Must be located in the DMV area

- Strong organizational and project management skills, with high attention to detail and proactivity
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs and deadlines

Location:
Remote – DMV Required: Remote employees that must be based in the DMV area for reasons related to their position do not need to come into the office. Employees can work remotely in the DMV area as part of a 35-hour workweek with core hours from 10am-3pm Eastern time, and a reliable high-speed internet connection is essential.

While performing duties of the job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
